My Mossberg 500A

Post by allingeneral »

I just bought this brand new at the F'burg gun show this past weekend. I probably could have picked a used one up somewhere A LOT cheaper...but hey, I was kinda in the moment - you know how it is!

I also picked up a couple of boxes of 00 Buck Shot while I was at it.

I also just bought a pistol grip stock for it and should have that installed in a couple of weeks.

I really need to pick one of these up. Looks good. That an extended shell tube? How many does it hold? 7? 8?

I drooled over a Remington 870 synthetic at Cabelas in WV Monday. Only $360. Sorry that I didn't indulge myself, but I already had around $400 of ammo in the cart. They had a good deal on .223 and powder.
No more catchy slogans for me...I am simply fed up...4...four...4...2+2...

It holds 6+1 (2-3/4 and 3" shells). I can't wait to get it out and put some lead through it.

Only 6, hmm, memory is off. I thought they held 6 without the extension. Oh, well.

Hmm... I just looked it up - the one I have - the "Persuader", as it's affectionately known - model 50577 - is an 8-shot (7+1). When I try to get that 8th round in there, it's about 1/4-inch too long. Not gonna play with it any more tonight. Need to get it out on the range and see how it likes to hunt clay pigeons :)

Nice shotgun. What length shells are you using? the 7+1 spec should be for 2 3/4 inch shells, 3 inch would be 6+1.

That's the 500A Persuader I was looking for when I bought my 5+1 model, but the price was right so no complaints here. Good score

I have 2-3/4 Sellier and Bellot 00 Buckshot in there and it's only holding 6+1.

What's the barrel length?. If it's 18.5", then that would be correct.

Weird, mine is an older 500A but with the plug removed I'm pretty sure it's 4+1 for 3 inch and 5+1 for 2 3/4. Maybe Mossberg changed the specs and didn't update their website. Or, maybe they had to plug it to 6+1 to meet some silly state law in one of the communistic states. I'd check for a plug.

So, I bought some Remington 2-3/4" shotshells today and it seems that the 00 Buck shells are about 1/4" longer, even though they're both marked as 2-3/4" shells.

So, long story short - I can get 7+1 into the Mossberg 500 with the Remington shells, but only 6+1 with the S&B.

It seems to me, that I remember reading somewhere, that shotgun shells are measured in the uncrimped position. I just went and got a couple of old shotgun shells (unfired) out of my gun cabinet. The "2 3/4" Winchester actually measures 2 1/4". The "3" (marked) Remington actually measures 2 1/2". Upon firing they open up to 2 3/4 and 3 inch.

That's why a 3" shell will chamber in a 2 3/4" chamber, but the crimp, will extend past the end of the chamber, forcing the shot charge, and wads to compress as they go through that area, creating a dangerous pressure spike. I know a lot of people who do it, but it's sure not a good idea.

It's may be that the European shell is measured in the crimped position. What they call a 2 3/4 inch shell is actually what we would call a 3". I'd be careful what gun I shot them in. In your case it won't matter too much, since the Mossberg has chambers cut for 3", but it might for others.

That makes sense - look at the picture above. The Winchester shell is crimped closed at the end. The S&B shell has more of a "cap" on the end with a rolled end to hold that cap on. So, the S&B shell has a much smaller crimp area that opens up versus the Winchester shell.

I'll go blow a couple of them up and take some measurements. :fireright:

Have you tried cycling the Aguilla mini slug/bucksot thru it yet? The only pump that I have that will reliably cycle them is a Winnie 1300 but don't have a Mossy to try.
