AR-15 Purchase Questions

Post by zombiehunter »

This is my first time posting so sorry if i'm posting in the wrong section but here we go,

I'm looking for clarification on purchasing an AR-15 as far as the age requirement. I have looked in the code of Virginia and have not seen anything that states that one has to be over 21 to purchase an assault rifle, just that you have to be 18 to purchase a rifle. So whats the age requirement 18 or 21?

The requirement is 18 for a long gun (rifle/shotgun) and 21 for a handgun - unless you purchase the handgun from a private seller (i.e., you can't buy a handgun from an FFL dealer until you're 21)

Welcome aboard! Go get your new AR15! ...and come back and post pictures - we love gun porn :lovegunporn: :)

Your friend has encountered an idiot. They are thick on the ground at gun stores.

AH! One counterance...

There is a provision on the form that KAINE put that requires "Proof of U.S. Citizenship for Assault Weapons." Luckily a CHP, or a Voter Registeration works for that verification.

I'm reviving this thread. Yesterday I was in Dance's Sporting Goods Store and they had a sign that said something to the the effect of "You must be 21 to purchase an assault weapon!"

Which annoyed me for two reasons:
A: They aren't assault weapons unless they are select fire!
B: Because I was pretty sure that wasn't Virginia law.

I meant to ask the owner of the store about it. He was siting right in front of me but I didn't.
So now I'm wondering are you guys wrong?
Or are the gun shop owners around here a wee bit self-righteous?
OR is there a rogue ATF agent telling people this?(<--favorite choice)

One thing in VA is they consider any rifle with a magazine that can hold over 20 rounds to be an assault weapon by VA state law..Nonsense I know but blame it on no nothing politicians.......That age of 21 to purchase is pure BS ,,,I would ask the place denying the sale to show the statute or law that they are citing and then straighten them out , Wonder if they;re doing it to keep the looky lou;s to a minmum?

I sooo need to modify my Marlin 1895 SBL to hold more than 20 rounds so I can assault buffalo and bears. I saw this rotary drum concept for a shot gun. It had four tubes vice the nominal one and each was loaded with rounds. It rotated and fed rounds from each tube.

Ya gotta admit they have some real deep thinkers in the State General Assembly... I was looking all over for that 21 stuff and kept hitting the magazine thing and figured to bring that out for a chuckle,,,,Wonder why it doesn;t count for pistols.....Those 30 round 9mm;;s come to mind ........ :pistol:

I've only been asked for proof of US Citizenship once - when buying an XM177 clone from Dark Sun at a Gun Show in Richmond. The guy that owns Dark Sun would accept nothing short of my birth certificate as proof of citizenship. I really wanted the rifle but between that and his attitude I no longer even stop at their table at gun shows since then.

I bought an AK47 "clone" a year of so ago with no ID other than the usual for any gun purchased at a gunshow from a different dealer.

Seems no matter what the law is the final determination is made by the dealer with the gun, right or wrong.

It's their FFL on the line, not yours. They get to take the heat if they sell someone something they should not have. It's their livelihoods. If they want to be cautious, it's their prerogative.
