Man, I love Charles Krauthammer! He just has such an eloquent way of putting his thoughts together. That's an excellently written piece, in my opinion. Thank you Charles!

Re: The WaPo isn't our favorite paper......
Any guesses on what would happen if I printed this on a t-shirt to wear when I next fly?

Re: The WaPo isn't our favorite paper......
I like the first one. The author got it right:
The governments securing of our rights extends only to the point in which they have done so in their natural state. I.e. government can not and should not secure them beyond their natural state and whenever it attempts to do so, it inherently violates the very rights it is suppose to protect. The theory - perhaps by now it seems like a quaint anachronism - on which the nation was founded is, or was: Government is instituted to protect preexisting natural rights essential to the pursuit of happiness.
This is spot on too:
Life, in of itself, is full of risk. There is no such thing as "safety" since there is no way to reduce the risk of anything to zero and still be alive. But enough, already. Enough trivializing important values - e.g., air safety - by monomaniacal attempts to maximize them. Disproportion is the common denominator of almost all of life's absurdities. Automobile safety is important. But attempting to maximize it would begin (but by no means end) with forbidding left turns.
Bureaucracies try to maximize their missions. They can't help themselves. Adult supervision is required to stand athwart this tendency, yelling "Stop!"
Again, Buckley: "Every year, whether the Republican or the Democratic Party is in office, more and more power drains away from the individual to feed vast reservoirs in far-off places; and we have less and less say about the shape of events which shape our future."

The problem is that the WaPo is (really) the only game in town. The star is barely more than a rag (maybe Moon can rescue it), the NY Post is expensive to get and really no better. What are we left with in the NOVA area? The WSJ is a good *national* paper, but not so good at the local stuff. And Courtland Malloy is amusing.zephyp wrote:Title of this thread: The WaPo isn't our favorite paper......

But, seriously, if there is a viable alternative I'd love to give it alook!

The Washington Times is a little more right leaning...and pay for the NY Times? I'd rather beat myself with a muddy stick.
