Field Trip for the Super Match

Post by Paliden »

It didn't take long to get to the range (next day) It was sunny and very windy but the range was sheltered pretty good. I can tell you I have not shot a rifle like this in more years than most of you are old 1970 to be exact. So my nerves were up a little and it showed. She did feel good to hold again, recoil was very nice. Before now I shot mostly a LR308. A most pleasant problem to over come was the trigger. The M1a was very crisp but not to light, maybe 4 pounds. The LR308 was long , so there was a couple of quick followup shots LOL! I got use to it though. Brass fell in a nice neat pile 4' at 1:30 of me, since I save brass I liked that!
I pulled 2 boxes of ammo out of the ammo vault: Winchester white box, Remington and a box of my reloads I used in my LR, I forgot to put my reloads in the shooting bag, so I guess I will just have to go back.
Winchester: This ammo went all over the place, but it did do the same in my LR so I was not concerned.
Remington, did a lot better, I did get a 1/2 in. group @ 100 but I confuse it was me more than the weapon not doing better. I'm NOT 18 anymore.
So after the range we went hunting!!! Boy what a flash back. Saw a couple deer nothing to write home about. Did have one problem and it might have been the scope, maybe it was dirty I don't know. Once in a while as I scanned the tree line across the field I thought I saw someone in black pj's and a straw hat. I'll check the lens and make sure it is good and clean next time.
Anyone got any good 308 service load info? I have on had right now Hornady AMax 168gr Molly and Interbond 150gr bullets. Gunderwood I know you have some good loads.

For my bolt .308, I use 175gr SMK and Varget. 44.7gr with Lapua brass or 45gr with Win./Rem. is usually considered a good OCW load. http://optimalchargeweight.embarqspace.com/

I currently don't own a semi-auto .308 (sold mine to finance other things), but they seemed to like VV N135 and 147-150 FMJ Hornady bullets. Would shoot 1MOA over 20 rounds at 100 yards and with an 3.5x ACOG (not a precision scope). Burned clean and worked well with my 16" barrel. Probably a bit fast for your 22" barrel and heavier bullets though.
