He was pretty excited about the whole thing. We discussed pointing the firearm downrange at all times as well as proper techniques for grip and stance.
After firing about 4 rounds with the Ruger (I was shooting my .38 while he was loading the clip for another round), I asked him if he wanted to try the .38. He was a little hesitant at first (and so was I!). I wasn't sure if he would be able to handle the recoil and I didn't want to bring him home to his mom with the imprint of the back of my gun on his forehead! So, for the first 10 rounds or so, I held onto his hands and helped him grip as I continuously reminded him that he needed to "Hold on tight".
I took the Ruger back to the counter and asked the guy if I could trade it in for the Walther P22. He had no problems with it. We had 20 round of .22 left, so I set him free with the Walther (after a quick lesson regarding operation since it's quite a bit different from the Ruger). He finished shooting up another target with the Walther and had now gone through 100 .22 rounds along with about 10 .38's.
I had been shooting the .38 in his off time and had probably gone through about 50 rounds or so. I still had two boxes of .38's left, so we went on and shot them up too. They were all reloads that I bought at the F'burg gun show last weekend. I had 100 wadcutters and 50 JHP's. I loaded up a cylinder of the JHPs and Austin really liked how "Fire came out of the barrel!" hehe So, I let him shoot up a few of them as well.
All-in-all, we shot 150 rounds of .38 and 100 rounds of .22. When we got ready to leave, the guy running the place told us that he thought wee were going to pitch a tent and stay all afternoon. lol

It was a great time and I was glad to introduce Austin to firearms for the first time.
Here's a picture of a clean target that Austin fired 5 JHP's into from about 6 yards. Not bad for a first timer!
