small cc gun ---kel tec
Re: small cc gun ---kel tec
I think that like most other products the PF9 had some issues that were not found until the gun got out into the real world. My 2010 PF9 works as well as any of my other guns. The difference may be that I am a tinkerer and I take all of my guns apart and inspect, polish, and lubricate them the way that I think they should be. The PF9 was not meant to be an everyday shooter and as such has drawbacks such as snappy recoil and making your hand hurt after too many shots but it conceals very well on just about anyone and shoots a 9MM round. I was willing to "tweak" a gun that I could get for less than $300 to make it a reliable shooter. If your not willing to that you should look at buying a more expensive gun.
One other thought. I had a Hi Point C9 a while back that shot very low and to the left right out of the box and I could still hit a head sized target with it at 3 yards. In fact I can hit a head sized target with just about anything at 3 yards.

Yup...very nice and they fit well almost anywhere. I keep one in a kitchen drawer for Young...DavidG wrote:Check out a Bersa 380 Thunder concealed carry. They are very dependable and get great reviews and the price is reasonable.

Absolutely, it just isn't my first choice. I've said it about the Hi-Points before, they have their place in the market, but they aren't high on my list. To each his own.Diomed wrote:Better to have something than nothing. I have owned and used a PF9 for 3 yrs no with no issues other than it isn't a fun range gun. It has been accurate and reliable for over 1000 rounds now. It has been highly concealable and has done everything it has been asked to do. It has a very good rep on several other boards I frequent among KT owners. All I can attest to is my personal exerience with my PF9. I recently bought a Sub2000 that uses 9mm Glock mags and it has been faultless but only through a few hundred rounds so far. I carry the PF9 the majority of the time but also rotate several other guns too, namely Kimber and CZ. I have never used the CS from KT but others that have give it high grades.
I didn't like the trigger when I first got it but it has broken in nicely. Nowhere near a s nice as my 1911's or CZ but adequete for hitting accurately to 10yds and further.

I should clarify that my bad experiences were with the pocket guns, not the larger sub-compacts. I've heard better things about the larger guns.

I'm not a gun snob but I did purchase my Ruger LCP with the understanding may life may depend on it one day.
Most of what I've read and heard states that the Kel-tecs are inferior pocket pistols. Of course a lot of that stuff came from guys who were gun snobs and would never carry a pocket pistol unless forced to, and only then the Sig P238. Actually those are the same gun snobs who never buy anything except Glocks and Sigs. So maybe I shouldnt always take others peoples advice.
In any case, glad you are having success with your Kel-tec.

Until recently, I owned a PF-9. I loved the size, weight, fire power and ergonomics of the pint sized 9mm. It was very easy to conceal while wearing darn near anything. Sure, the recoil was snappy but expected for a 12oz weapon.
The only thing that (for me) prevented it from being the perfect CC weapon was it's reliability. MINE, was truly horrid. The only shot that I could reliably expect to go bang was the first round that I kept on the pipe. After that it was a crap shoot, with the odds of a malfunction increasing with each round sent down range. Keep in mind, I hear that Kel-tec has an awesome customer service dept and will bend over backwards to make them work as designed. I never gave 'em a chance to fiddle with it as I sold it "As IS" to a friend who is a Kel-tec affectionado. Like I stated IF it was a reliable weapon I'd still own it. Instead, I now have a 100% reliable Walther PPS. I was about the cost of damn near two PF-9s but it goes bang Every Time.

I sometimes carry a Beretta Bobcat in .25...very reliable and a couple well placed shots from that will bring a world of hurt on a BG...I have no worries carrying that...

Snob like the term rich is relative term. There are people who cringe at the idea of CCing anything less than a $5,000 custom 1911. I love my Ruger LCP and CC it often.ShortMan wrote:I'm not a gun snob but I did purchase my Ruger LCP with the understanding may life may depend on it one day.

Prior to buying my Kel-Tec Sub-2000, I had two Rugers, which I still use and am very happy with.gunderwood wrote:Snob like the term rich is relative term. The problem (for me) is that Ruger doesn't have a 9MM that is nearly as small as the Kahr PM-9, the Kel-Tec PF-9 or the Rohrbaugh. I figured I'd give the PF-9 a shot, and if it doesn't work out for me, I'll gradually move up the price list until I find something that does.
That said, if Ruger did make a true pocket 9, that would have probably been my first choice.
The Kel-Tec Sub-2000 is a seriously cool range toy, though, especially if you shoot at Sharpshooters and can't use rifle calibers. And it's been 100% reliable.

I bought my Airweight for conceal pocket carry in the summer with shorts. I ended up carrying it nearly all the time - well worth the money. It's not an easy gun to shoot but from all reports is eminently reliable. I've dry fired mine so much now that the trigger is wicked awesome.
Re: small cc gun ---kel tec
I fired a friends Kel-Tec and the Taurus TCP PT738 before deciding which to buy. I chose the PT738. The grip on it is a little more substantial. Trigger guard is slightly bigger.
One thing I especially did not like about the Kel-Tec was that my trigger finger rubbed against the trigger guard while firing, This was irritating.

No Exceptions.

Remember those powder-puff loads we played around with? Some of those, and you'll actually want to practice with that thing at the range. I know you've got a full schedule at the moment, but when you're ready to consider reloading, let me know and I'll show you how to make some.Mindflayer wrote:I bought my Airweight for conceal pocket carry in the summer with shorts. Re: small cc gun ---kel tec
I bought a Keltec PF9 last month and so far it has been completly reliable. I have bought 200 rounds of Speer Lawman down range and 1 box of 124gr +P Speer Gold Dot, 25 rounds of 127gr +P+ Ranger and 20 rounds of 147gr +P Federal HST. Accuracy is around 3 inches out to around 10 yards and is still acceptable to me out to 15 yards. The recoil is very snappy but managable and while the trigger is heavy and long it works, I just have to use the tip of my trigger finger to pull the trigger. I bought the gun to be a back up and to carry when I need to carry something a little lower profile then my Glock 19. Given the choice between the Glock and the Keltec I will choose the Glock everytime but someplaces I go I need the smaller gun so for the role that I bought the Keltec for it works great.
Re: small cc gun ---kel tec
I have a PF( and came to realize quickly that it is very susceptible to limp wristing, much more it seems than other pistols its size. My wife can't shoot it once without a stovepipe while I don't have problems with it. I am trying to decide on whether or not to do the fixes suggested or just getting rid of it. I shoot well enough with it although I don't like the long trigger pull. I only carry it when I am in very light clothes and can't carry my Glock 23 or Springfield XD .40 sub.

Re: small cc gun ---kel tec
i have a p11 that will shoot as good as any small 9mm. the trigger is a long, but i put a trigger shoe on mine. that helps with the pull. this is not a target pistol. it it for carry more so than target shooting, but it will hit the bull ring at 10 yds. at no problem.what do you want out of a $279.00 gun.ProShooter wrote:I did a 50 round field test with the 9mm Keltec and found it to be a filthy little piece of trash that couldnt hit the target at 3 yards.
Re: small cc gun ---kel tec
i have a pf9 and love it!fits everywhere, shoots really accurate and no issues what so ever with mine! . they do snap when shot but should be expected with such a light weight gun!ive heard people complain about the recoil but its no big deal to me and my sons 10 and shoots it very well..we will be getting the p3at very soon i hope.
Re: small cc gun ---kel tec
A lot has been said as to why it's not the greatest choice of a carry piece.
I have to agree with these guys. You want something ABSOLUTELY 100% reliable. Someone mentioned running two boxes of defense ammo through theirs and that's good enough. Not so. That's what, 40 rounds? What happens if number 41 is a problem? I wouldn't carry anything I haven't run hundreds of rounds through.
Yeah some people are on a budget and "need" a cheap gun. I understand what it's like to not have much money but we're talking about your life and the lives of your loved ones. They are worth more than 275 bucks. Hell you can find a used Glock for around 400. Don't eat out with the family at all this month and you've got yourself a VERY reliable pistol.
I carry a Glock 19 every single day. I'm 6'4" 170 pounds, if I turn sideways I disappear. I have never been made and I do not find it hard to conceal in an IWB holster at 3-4 o'clock, even in a t-shirt and shorts. If you really can't figure out how to carry a Glock, XD, M&P whatever, get a 442 or 642 or any other snub nose revolver and throw it in a pocket holster.
I have yet to come across a 380 auto model that hasn't had some kind of serious problems. I would not carry a gun that has a malfunction 1 out of 100 times let alone once every mag or two. I will not leave my life up to those chances. I've owned several Glocks and have never had a problem...ever. I have friends that have XDs, M&Ps, Berettas etc that have never had problems. Get something that is a proven winner. Your life may depend on it someday, that's why we choose to carry.
You are going to have to give up comfort to CCW. I hate when my pistol digs into my back or my hip but it's the "sacrifice" you make to stay safe. You may have to dress slightly different than you have been. It's not like you strap on a gun and you're good to go anyway. It's a lifestyle and if you don't change your lifestyle you shouldn't be carrying.
