Newcomer in Richmond
Hi,
I just signed up today and am shocked at the number of other new members. Glad to be aboard.
I am an unashamed neophyte re: guns, but want to qualify to purchase and carry. Could someone give me pointers on how to get started? I want to know the steps I'll need to follow to get legally registered to own a firearm. I would like to get both a sidearm and a rifle. Also seeking information on safety classes, other requirements.
Thanks to all for the help, in advance,
Garry

VA does not require that you register a firearm, nor that you yourself get registered. You simply go to the shop fill out the form, wait for an hour or so while they check you're background info and buy your gun. As for carryin your gun, open carry is completely legal in VA without taking any class at all, to conceal carry however you have to take the class offered by more than a couple gun shops i'm sure in your area, and go through some paperwork with the courts.

Hi, welcome to the forum.
This is a fairly new forum so we are all "new members", it started in March of this year. That doesn't mean there isn't a lot of good information here though.
You can find a safety class at most any gun show. Also check this thread http://vagunforum.net/merchant-advertis ... -t118.html, there is a link where you can find a list of available classes. They are given at Bass Pro just north of Richmond
In addition to what Nick provided check out the "Resources" list in the upper left corner of this page. The only requirements for purchasing a firearm in VA is 1. you have a photo ID (VA Drivers License) and something else with your address on it (voter registration, bill, check, etc.), 2. you can pass the background check. Your DL must have been issued at least 30 days prior to the purchase. Handguns purchases are limited to 1 per 30 day period unless you have a CHP or meet certain other requirements. No limit on rifles or shotguns.
Before you decide to open carry read the laws applicable to carrying a firearm. There are some restrictions to where you can carry a firearm in VA, the restrictions differ for open and concealed carry.

Welcome aboard Garry.
Just take your Driver's License and another form of ID with your address on it and pick up your firearm! They might want some money too, so don;t forget to bring that along as well
Let us know if you have any specific questions.

Welcome to the group! Are you a VCDL member yet?
Re: Newcomer in Richmond
Thanks for the good info, folks. To those worried about my use of guns, fear not: I am taking firearms-safety training classes now through the summer.
Good input from all, nice to be aboard.

Welcome Garry. Hope you stay awhile. Pay no attention to Bobtail. He's getting spun up and ready for the 4 July March on Congress
