Shilen Barrels
Shilen Barrels
I ordered a Shilen barrel today for a custom build Iv'e been wanting to do. They don't appear to be hurting from the bad economy since it'll be 25 weeks before I get my barrel.
I hope it's worth the wait.

I'm building a new "critter getter". A compact 6x45 or a 6mm/223 as Shilen calls it. Using a savage action. 18" barrel with a 1in10 twist.

Nice. I'm sure you have seen my custom 300WSM critter getter. I have a 6mmBR being built (mid-weight sporter vice heavy benchrest) that should be done early next year. I'm thinking of building (as much as possible me rather than a gunsmith) a pair of 20Vartag or 204 Ruger's to shoot the 39gr BK or 40gr Vmax/BT. They would be for high volume shooting out to 400-500 yards. 300WSM is wicked cool for reaching out and touching them, but the barrel heats to quickly to use it for high volume (prairie dog) hunting.
What are you plans for bullets? Who is doing the chamber job? I assume you are having it throated for the varmint bullets (that will make the Shilen shine)? Those Savages are great guns/actions for the money. Particularly if you are using the accutrigger. If I had to choose a low cost factory gun for varmint or tactical use, I would go for the Savages with the accutriggers hands down.

Shilen is doing all the work. I use to be a die hard remington fan, still own a 700 in 6mm and a 660 in .308 but once I tried a savage that did it. Plus Iv'e heard too many times of someone buying a cheap stevens, throwing together a handload and shooting sub-moa out of the box. The accutrigger took some getting used to but with the right load my .223 will keep them in a 1/2" even with the 16" pencil barrel if I do my part.
