Wilson Combat Tactical Trigger Unit (TTU)

Post by gunderwood »

I just added one of these to my AR15 carbine: http://shopwilsoncombat.com/Tactical-Tr ... nfo/TR-TTU

IMHO, this is best AR trigger period! However, they cost an arm and a leg. WC makes this in both single and two-stage, but I prefer the single stage for anything, but a long range match gun. The trigger break is very crisp. Not the best trigger I've ever used, but perfect for a tactical carbine. The trigger pull is super smooth, no grit. I think it feels like a slightly stiffer 1911 trigger and love it.

Installation is easy and just like the video shows. The unit is integrated and there are no loose parts besides the cross pins. I have been playing with snap caps, but haven't shot it yet (tomorrow I will). I wanted a smooth, crisp trigger for my AR that was designed to set off milspec primers/surplus. I did not want an all out match trigger which often uses lighter springs to lighten the trigger. WC doesn't do that. The hammer tension is strong. This feels like a good match trigger, but at a reasonable weight for shooting with gloves, etc. The trigger face is smooth (not ribbed).

I didn't post picks because there really isn't much to show. It is one unit and the website picks do it justice. If you are looking for a better AR trigger, consider this one!

Edit: Trigger reset is incredibly short. I estimate trigger travel to be approx. 1/8 of an inch. Since this is a single stage, reset is the same.

Have you used it yet? I ended up getting a Timney 4# for one of my ARs. I was going to get a single stage version of the Wilson, but they were out and the Timney was a lot less. Thanks.

Yes, I have used it and absolutely love it. I haven't used the Timney. Perhaps we should get together and do a little comparison shooting. To be honest, I'm not sure how you could improve on the TTU. You could make it lighter, but that isn't appropriate on a tactical carbine IMHO. I haven't measured the weight, but 3.5-5lbs is ideal for most tactical guns regardless of type IMO. The trigger break is match quality (no take-up, no creep, no play and it is smooth) and the reset is very short. I think the reset is approximately 1/8". It *might* be as much as 3/16". Still the best AR trigger I've ever used.

I also like the fact that it is a self contained unit, unlike the stock unit and some aftermarket triggers. Pop the pins out and the whole trigger comes out, not parts of a trigger. I don't expect to be popping out my trigger often, but I think an integrated and self-supporting trigger will wear much better. Designers have controlled interfaces between the moving parts rather than each gun supporting the moving parts slightly differently.

Could someone else match this trigger? Sure. Could they do it cheaper? Perhaps, but you buy a brand like WC or Timney because you know it will work. I would be interested to see the Timney sear (engagement surfaces) and trigger face. The engagement surface should be as large as possible so the trigger force is spread out and you aren't achieving a light trigger with just springs. Springs that are too light cause reliability issues, especially when igniting mil-spec primers. The WC springs are just as strong as the mil-spec springs it replaced. I pretty much only shoot surplus or surplus like reloads and have not had a problem (yet...knock on wood).

Trigger face designs are a personal preference, but generally they should be as wide as possible. Spreading the load out across your finger makes the trigger feel lighter than it actually is. That is one of the "tricks" to keep the trigger weight sufficiently high for tactical work (the actual pressure required to trip it does not change, just the human perception of it) and still use good, strong springs.

Trigger curve matters too as the trigger is a lever. Pull it further down and it takes less pressure to trip it because of the longer lever arm.

The Timney is also a one piece unit. Trigger reset is short, and pull is very crisp. I've used the rifle it's in during a 3-Gun match, it worked very well compared to a stock RRA trigger I have on a different AR. I have also used a Spike's Battle trigger, which was decent. I had an opportunity to try a Geiselle and it's very nice for a two-stage trigger. I'm still debating whether to get another Timney or something else for my 6.8 Carbine, hence the question. Where are you located?
