Getting a CCP.....

Post by FordTek »

Hey guys, I have a quick question for you about Concealed Carry permit requirements here in Va.

My father was in the military. He thought his DD-214 form was enough to qualify him to obtain the permit without having to take another firearm safety course. The county he lives in though refused his DD-214 and told him he needs to take the safety course. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance,

My DD-214 was all I needed in Spotsylvania County.

From the VSP website here: http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_Res ... dgunPermit

5. Presenting evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or current military service or proof of an honorable discharge from any branch of the armed services;

Whatever county told him that can BIOTA.

A DD214 is absolutely sufficient for applying for the permit.

My DD214 was all I needed to get mine and it should be the same for all counties. Sounds like someone in the clerks or sheriff's office is clueless. Check out the code of Virginia link at the top left of this page and you should be able to find and print the code for him, then let him nicely educate the person who screwed up so the next guy after him doesn't have to go through a bunch of BS.

By the way its a CHP - concealed HG permit and your county cant make up their own rules...DD214 is perfectly acceptable per VA code which a county cannot supersede or preempt...

I had to present the paperwork that is on line to the county clerk that show's that as a retired LEO I don't have to pay anything to get a permit issued from the county. It took about 6 week's for the paperwork to go through but I did get the permit at no charge to me so I saved about $50.00. My point is don't take what a County Clerk say's for granted and as if what they say is written in stone. Copy the on line paperwork and take it with you highlighted with a marker like I did.

P.S. I know someone will say something about the Special Priv. that I got for being a retired LEO I don't care I earned it.

I agree with you, it should not have to be paid for by anyone. But in the meantime I can get mine for nothing and other's have to pay and this make's some people on this board upset.

Bill, thanks for your service. You and countless others have indeed paid a price. But, the law isnt your fault. You are merely the benefactor. Folks need to be PO'd with the system that makes the laws and I suggest we/they focus on bigger issues than who has to pay $50 for a CHP every 5 years...

That's who I'm not happy with, the system. Bill is an upstanding gentleman. I don't like the idea that I can't exercise your rights without government permission and I have to pay for it as well.

Well, fortunately VA allows for open carry which I can do without paying any sort of fee. But, I see your point. I don't see how carrying open or carrying concealed really makes much of a difference (other than the obvious). But, the Government's gotta make a buck off of us somehow, I suppose...

Oh I'm with ya Garrett...If it were left up to me and many of us there would be no (or very very few) gun laws -- only self policing by the community...

I have my application, it's notarized, I have a copy of my DD214. So I take these to the county office, pay and wait. What steps am I missing?
Never initiate force against another. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.KYFHO

You need to have copies. Original +2 or 3 for the clerk and one for yourself. Also, some counties require fingerprints. Dont forget to keep a copy for yourself...

No, you do not. You need:

A copy of your training.
The completed application
$50
Fingerprints if required by local jurisdiction.

They can make their own copies.

Not sure if anything has recently changed, but I was also told to bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope for them to mail the permit in. Maybe the budget is better now, and the state can afford stamps. Anyway, just wanted to mention it, just in case.

Not required by law. Hold them accountable.

You must be in Fairfax.

Well, I lived in Alexandria at the time. In Fairfax now, though. Truth be told, I'd actually forgotten it and they did agree to mail it on their dime. Which they did. I figured that for as much as they were hitting me in taxes in Alexandria, they could spring for the 42¢ or whatever it cost at the time to mail an envelope.

As a veteran LEO i am damn sure bill has earned it...as for conceal carry just got mine took 15 days from application to permint,,,filled out form, paid 50 and then they sent me to the PD for fingerprints.... (this is stupid as my prints are already on file with the FBI)if i can legaly buy a gun why cant i carry it concealed with no permit ,the CC app seemed to be the same as a gun buy app.all i can say is that the clerks office in Newport News have it together.
