Wow, truly sorry to hear about this...now I know why you asked about the shotgun...I'm just now reading this by the way.

I dont run but do bike and carry every time I go out. I'm sure you can find a way to carry while you run. Hope you and your wife are ok...

Ashburn Strong Arm Robbery: Shortly before 10 p.m. 42-year-old Ashburn woman was jogging in the area when she was assaulted and her cell phone was taken. The suspect grabbed the victim from behind and threw her to the ground and demanded her cell phone. No weapon was displayed and the victim did not require medical attention. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 5’8” tall, with curly hair and has a heavy build. He was wearing dark clothing and fled the area on foot in an unknown direction. An aerial and ground search was conducted in the area but no suspect was located.

I read this on LCSO daily incident report... Didn't know it happened to someone from forums.
Assaulting/robbing people just for a iPhone?
Ashburn area is getting worse and worse...

Glad to hear you made it out safely though.
Your welcome GS78.

Sorry to hear about your wife. Mine has carried off and on, but I have been gently nudging her to do it more often. Truth be told, Ashburn has a statistically low violent crime rate. These things happen everywhere, but there do seem to be a rash of them lately. Seems a couple of thugs realized that well to do who are use to their HOA being the center of the universe generally aren't armed. Perhaps I'll get less crazy stares when I OC around Ashburn.

Now might also be an awesome time to talk about bringing a German Shepherd into the household. You'd have to be crazy to go for a person with an 85 lb Shepherd running along side them

Nothing complements the beauty of mother nature quite like a semi-automatic weapon.

Threadjack - just curious, what do you carry? I've been thinking about this - I assume you do the fanny pack thing? It has occurred to me that in this economy a $1500 bike might make for any easy mark, and it's rare that I carry a u-lock anymore (btw, those will ruin someone's day, too). I was thinking about picking up a .380 or something - thoughts?

Ok, threadjack over.

So, the daylight armed robbery of a subway was by an African-American.
2 x daylight robberies of Hair Cuttery by a white guy
Now this strong arm by a hispanic

So, there you go, GS78, the full run down of the latest criminal activity by ethnicity. Well, at least we're a diverse bunch in Ashburn.

Thanks! I'll have to see if I can check one of those out somewhere. The stock grip looks a little more adult hand-friendly than the G26. My 'normal' carry is a G23, but it's just a tad bulky for on the bike I think. The single stack doesn't worry me - if I can't do what I need to do with 8 or 9 rounds, I probably should spend more time practicing...

The white guy with a knife robbed the Taco Bell also about a week and a half ago. Then there is this one - ethnicity TBD...

If you have any information regarding the identity of this suspect, you are asked to contact Investigator E. Wilk of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 703-777-0475.

My sympathy on your wife being assaulted, I am glad she wasn't hurt and it sounds like it was a learning experience for both of you. I hope the individual involved is caught quickly and manages to visit one of the finer detention facilities around the area.
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

That is what concerns me. It was a very bold, brazen act, and the criminal could have just run by and grabbed the phone. Instead, he forced her to the ground from behind on one of the busiest thoroughfares in Ashburn Village. I just get a bad feeling this was a precursor to more violent crime.

If there was any attempt to drag her off, then yes. Movement to a secondary crime scene is really, really bad.

I road bike. If I wear a standard jersey I might stick a .25 auto in a back pocket. Fits nicely. Or, I use an IWB (.380) inside my bibs and under an arm. I try to avoid carrying in a way where I have to stop and open a pack or zipper. The only problem is sweat, so make sure you've got a thin coat of oil on the gun and clean afterwards. I do have a nice bike and when I ride I use the same philosophy as carrying a gun...if they wont let me bring my bike in I dont go in...

FWIW, my wife really took to handgun far better than I expected. We set up a private session with a local trainer, http://www.marksmenmasters.com/. She loved the education and appreciated the expert pointers on the range.
Ron and crew at MarskmenMasters are an excellent training provider - I am glad your wife is ok and that you are leading her through getting trained and increasing her awareness.

Good information - thanks! I ride road, cross, and mountain. Never have really had a problem or instance where I thought my life was in jeopardy (probably butchered the spelling there, I know), but I have been yelled at and have had a few things thrown at me by passing cars. Offroad, of course, I suppose the biggest threat is wildlife, and a .25 or .380 is probably just going to p*ss a rutting deer, coyote, or bobcat off.

Patrick - I didn't type this earlier because I honestly could not believe that the incident I was reading on my HOA forum involved a member on this forum. I am glad to hear that your wife was not physically injured, but I imagine you are both emotionally wrecked.

Please tell her that you are both in my thoughts & prayers.

Friends have been talking to the wife, telling her when she's on her own that pepper spray may just not do the job, and firearms are a great equalizer. She even asked last night if I owned a shotgun (I do, but it's an old 16 gauge). Trying to get her brother and cousin to take her out to the range and then perhaps she can get lessons.

I was really interested to see how diversity was reflected in the assaults. Thanks. It does seem that all groups are being proportionately represented... nice.

Firearms are a great equalizer. But until she's comfortable with one - carrying it and shooting it - pepper spray or a Taser might be an option. It's better than nothing, and pepper spray should at least slow down an attacker enough for her to make space.

If she's at all recoil-shy, I'm told that a 20-gauge shotgun is perfectly acceptable as a home defense gun. Not as much kick as a 12 gauge, as I understand it. Also, if it fits her better, you might consider a youth model - has a shorter stock. I know my next shotgun purchase is going to be something in a youth model (I can't reach the trigger on hubby's Mossberg).
