A second amendment advocacy group is taking issue with a program unveiled this week by the Charleston Police Department. The department says Project Gun Safe will be a way to call for more responsibility in gun ownership and a crackdown on illegal gun activity in the city.

The West Virginia Citizens Defense League condemns a part of the program as "the arrival of gun registration in West Virginia."

"We are very troubled by the fact the city seems to want to collect information about privately owned guns," said WVCDL Treasurer Jim Mullins. "We believe there is really no good, valid use for that."

The program included a number of initiatives, but the one raising the concerns of Mullins' organization is a call for legal gun owners to register information about all of the guns they own with the city police department. Although such a measure is voluntary, the WVCDL believes it creates a slippery slope.

"It's a laudable goal to encourage people to keep track of their own property," said Mullins. "But we think that asking people to provide the government with a listing of their guns, even if it's on a voluntary basis, is troubling."

Mullins blasted the city's leadership for the move and says it only adds to a history of anti-gun attitudes within the Charleston City Hall.

"Unfortunately the city of Charleston has a history of taking a very hostile view against legal gun owners," said Mullins.

He refers to city ordinances dating back to 1993 that required a three day waiting period for handgun purchases in the city limits, imposing a one-handgun a month purchase limit, and forbidding any citizen other than a police officer from carrying a firearm on city owned property.

"If the city holds the deed, the second amendment doesn't apply there in their view," said Mullins.

The Citizens Defense League is polling prospective lawmakers seeking
office in this fall's elections. The group continues to lobby the legislature to take action as other states have done, to curtail the ability of local government entities to create gun control measures more strict than state and federal laws.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A new gun control program in West Virginia’s capital is drawing criticism from a group that says it could be the first step toward a firearms ban.

Police Chief Brent Webster announced the Project Gun Safe program earlier this week. It includes voluntary registration of firearms with the city and a buyback program for unwanted guns.

The voluntary registration concerns members of the West Virginia Citizens Defense League, a gun rights lobbying group.

League President Keith Morgan of Charleston says gun registration is a necessary prerequisite to gun confiscation.

Webster says that’s not going to happen. He says the records would help police recover lost or stolen guns.

How many of you actually keep track of make and serial numbers of your firearms? Not saying we need the government to do it, but do any of you actually do this?

Sure do. Just like I keep an inventory of my TV's, stereo, jewelry, cameras, etc, for insurance purposes.

You bet I do and I keep it on the computer, on paper locked up separately from the guns, and on my cell phone. And looking at your arsenal list, it appears that you do too. I do not know about serial numbers though but it looks like you keep a pretty good inventory. I am a little jealous even.

The government already has the serials, make/model, etc. for a whole lot of my stuff...

You bet I do and I keep it on the computer, on paper locked up separately from the guns, and on my cell phone. And looking at your arsenal list, it appears that you do too. I do not know about serial numbers though but it looks like you keep a pretty good inventory. I am a little jealous even.

Yup, I keep mine in my email. I took pictures of all of them individually, noted serial numbers, and emailed them to myself. So even if my cel phone, computer, and papers get lost/stolen/burned, I have the numbers available with accurate descriptions.

Serial numbers of guns I own? Sure. Keeping track of them once I've sold them? Never. I refuse to keep the governments paperwork for them.
