Congressman Bobby Scott Interview

Post by Runcible »

Ryan Nobles of NBC12 interviewed Congressman Bobby Scott of Virginia's 3rd District recently, on the topic of the "gun show loophole". A sample of his scintillating rhetoric:
Scott: Well, I think it's important that we have a matrix where people who are not able to buy firearms shouldn't be able to buy firearms. People who have felonies, people who are mentally unstable, who are found not to be entitled to buy firearms, they go into a gun shop, they will be a background check. All we're asking is that the background check requirement also apply to gun shows where lots of weapons are sold. We found and seen videos of people going in to gun shows and not showing any ID at all, and certainly don't have to show anything but the money, and they come out with a firearm. Hand guns, military assault weapons and everything else without any background check at all. And all we're asking is the same requirement for a back ground check applying at gun shows as it applies everywhere else.
Anyone who frequents gun shows knows that the background check already applies to every gun sold by every dealer at every show. The only exception to the rule are private sales between individuals, and it doesn't matter if that sale occurs at a gun show, in a living room or on someone's porch - it's not a "gun show loophole"; it's a "private sale loophole". Private sellers are already required to verify that the purchaser is a resident of the state in which the transfer occurs and are strongly recommended to keep a record of the purchaser's name and address to exclude themselves from being a suspect in the event the gun is later recovered after being used in a crime, to say nothing of civil liability.

Also: private gun sales are a very small portion of the total number of sales at gun shows.

Last week Scott hosted a rigged forum in Washington - every forum panelist and guest speaker supports his bill, H.R. 2324, and there was no participation from the audience permitted. How does that qualify as a "forum"?

It would be nice if Congressman Scott actually came back to his district and asked his constituents what they think about Federal laws being applied to intra-state commerce. It would've been nice if Ryan Nobles asked Congressman Scott why he persists in sponsoring bills that are utterly contrary to the wishes of his constituents, or why Scott hasn't announced any town halls or public meetings for his constituents in 2010.

3rd District residents weary of being unrepresented by Congressman Scott have two alternatives this fall, Republican Chuck Smith and Libertarian James Quigley. Both campaigns are in serious need of money, if you're so inclined and have the means.

TO a douche bag anti gun zealot like Scott the very thought of a citizen having private sale rights is unthinkable,,,Imagine a citizen with the right to buy and sell his OWN things without the governmnet watching!!.He needs a new job.. I recommend greeter at WalMart.

Well, it's nice to see Congressman Scott on TV. He's been hiding out from his constituents for so long I'd forgotten what he looks like.

If you want to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldnt' have them, regulate the black market...that is where all of those sales happen.

Wait, you mean the black market doesn't give one hoot what you say? Oh well.

Uh, regulation creates the black market to begin with. I'm not saying that criminals should be able to walk into a gun shop with money and walk out with guns, but...trying to regulate the black market will only create a blacker market with higher prices and more thugs to take peoples money...and, here again not sure what the answer is but for law abiding citizens we should have no restrictions regarding firearms.

Think about this...if criminals knew every law abiding citizen had guns and were willing and knowledgeable in their use there might not be a black market for guns...

I look at like this ,,Private sale means just that PRIVATE SALE. Two people exchanging goods or whatever for currency or whatever without interference from any person or other entity..Federal , State or Local

Yes, I was being very sarcastic. I always like to point out that the USSR couldn't eliminate their black market and they went to great lengths; nothing I'm sure any of use would want to live under either.

@Garrett - I caught that and understand...the only way to eliminate the black market is deregulate whatever product you're trying to "regulate."

The bottom line is that preventing law abiding citizens from lawfully selling their property will not shrink the black market in gun sales to convicted felons and others prohibited by law from owning guns.

That bonehead Scott is very aware of that fact I'm sure,,It's a political ploy to get some backing for reelection, Guns are the last thing he is worried about. Getting as much face time in the media is more in line of what he is trying to accomplish.Trying to force this kind of legislation on the public only shows what a small person Scott is, A politican and they;re all expendable.

I'm torn on this fact. Sometimes I agree that they can't be that dumb, but other times I start to wonder if they really do believe it. Deluded by the shear awesomeness of their own presence and intellect. I really wonder sometimes if they really believe they can make it work...

Their egos IMHO play much to large a part in their actions,, their profiling is both arrogance and conceit personified ,,,,, We see far too many that think they are above the rules and that what they say should be gospel( to them anyway). One of the worst things about these self appointed messiahs is how they all stick together ,,,not along party lines but the fact that they are all elected types. Rarely is a foul word ever said against any colleauge of these SOB's, They all feed at the same trough of BS. I'm not familiar with Scotts district but I am willing to bet that gun owners are not on the top of his list of supporters.. The gun show loophole thing is a political hot potatoe that bonehads like Scott won''t let go away and will probably try sneaking it through on the tail of some ear marked POS in the months to come,
