chokes???

Post by larry3100 »

Although I have fired shotguns I have never owned one so to say I don't know much about them would be an understatement so with no experience with them to speak of I have 1 question...
Could someone explain the difference in chokes and what they are used for..do all shot guns have them, are they all adjustable??
thanks in advance for the help

Used to be...

full choke was the tightest standard choke. The idea was the "tighter" the choke the denser the shot pattern. Full chokes were used for turkey hunting, waterfowl hunting, squirrel hunting, etc.

modified choke was the next one down and was more "open" than the full choke. It was used on guns for grouse, quail, etc. where you hunted with dogs and jumped the birds in closer.

Improved cylinder was more open than the modified choke and used for stuff like woodcock, rabbits, grouse, etc. hunted where the brush/trees were thicker and jumping them and shooting them was a close up thing.

Cylinder bore was basically no choke and used in riot shotguns.

There are all kinds of additional chokes available in the new screw in/out chokes.

Be aware though that many times you can change your pattern density by changing either the brand of shell you shoot or the size of the shot or the type of shell - type meaning how heavy/light the shell is on powder/shot.
