XDM 9mm 3.8 @ Silver Eagle Group

Post by Mindflayer »

Went shooting with a friend today - me with my XDM and he with his brand new RRA AR-15. The lady at the desk remembered me from my class last Friday (good memory) and after paying the $25 per lane (I wanted my own lane), off we went. Well, we did first have to buy some targets, since I forgot all the Shoot-N-C at home.

THE GUN: This was my second time shooting the pistol, the first being the aforementioned class. I went through 100 rounds of Remington 115gr 9mm that I picked up at Dick's in Dulles Town Center. I have been told by my seasoned friends to practice at 7 yards first, and after making one giant hole, I decided to try 10 yards. Grouping was a little looser, but I thought pretty good for a novice (third time shooting a handgun at all). I placed a new target at 15 yards, and noticed I was shooting left - tightened up my technique with an immediate improvement.

I did fire my friend's AR-15, and it reminded me of shooting back in high school on the military range. A lot of fun. I've noticed one thing about people that count shooting as a hobby - you guys are pushers. I already like shooting and my friends are telling me I should try this or that. I'll get mine, though - I have or am introducing them to photography.

THE RANGE: Like I said, very friendly at the front desk. After shooting we took a look at what they had in the shop and the guy there was also helpful and cheery. I was disappointed as a coffee junkie that the coffee bar is closed. :coffee:
The lanes were as before - clean, well lit, ventilated, and not stiflingly hot. The RSO went over the safety terms again with everyone, reinforced no guns out of the box, and quickly moved to ensure muzzles were all pointed down range. There were several people shooting ARs, one guy getting personal training, and 2 couples shooting. Busy, but did not feel cramped or rushed.
I asked about the former annual package for the range, and there is a waiting list. IIRC, the cost will be $100 annual fee with a $40 monthly upkeep. Go more than twice a month, and it becomes more cost effective to go with the package.

THE EXPERIENCE: First, I think this is revenge for getting my friends into shooting photos. I am addicted and I've only been shooting 3 times (well, since firing long arms in high school and college two decades ago...). Second, I had no idea that 100 rounds would go so quickly. Third, I will be going back next week in all likelihood.
