Squirrel Problem

Post by Paliden »

It’s a good year for squirrels, but their hacking me off! Anyboby have any thoughts of thinning them out? BTW live in a sub-division
I'm starting to feel like the guy from Caddyshack where he was dealing with the goffers.
Maybe I could make some trip traps like Charlie did

Get yourself one of those high power BB or pellet guns,, Takes a squirrel out easy but not enough juice to penetrate much else, and they're quiet!!... One other idea is humane traps and then out of area release. Lastly if at all possible .remove their food source unless of course its tree stuff like pine cones and such

+1 for the high powered pellet rifle. Make sure you get expanding pellets and know what is behind your target. They will go through a squirrel.

On the other hand, hard to beat a suppressed .22lr with subsonic ammo. A good one of those is quieter than my pellet gun...

I had a squirrel problem so I got a good squirrel-proof birdfeeder. Now the blackbirds empty it in a day. My suggestion is to get some blackbirds. You will forget all about the squirrels. But then maybe you will have a different question?? :hysterical:

Put out a corn pile with a can of tannerite in the middle of it. Once you get 10 - 15 squirrels on it, shoot it. Bet you won't live in that subdivision anymore. :hysterical: :hysterical:

There is a pellet gun out now that shoots 1600 FPS, about $600.00

I picked up a Stoeger X20 .177 pellet rifle with a 3-9x40 AO scope for $179 at Clarke Bros. Regular pellets are 1000fps, alloy are 1200fps. I havent bagged a squirrel yet with it, for some reason they've been hiding from me. The report is not exactly quite, but a lot quieter than a .22

ok the PETA side of me says " There are babies in the nest" Now the Hunter side of me says I am just thinning the population. no matter what it will take at least 2 of those little greys to make a meal for 1. and you will need at least 4 or more for Squirrel and dumplings.

Here is a recipie

Servings: 4 Servings

Ingredients 2 large Squirrels
2 Bay leaves
1 c Sliced onion
1 c Chopped celery
10 md Carrots; quartered
2 ts Salt
1/2 ts Pepper
1 1/2 c Hot water
DUMPLINGS
2 c Flour
1/2 ts Salt
4 ts Baking powder
3/4 c Milk

Preparation Cut 2 squirrels into serving pieces. Place in a kettle and cover with 1 inch of water. Add 2 bay leaves and simmer for 1-1/4 hours, skimming as necessary. Add onions, celery and carrots. Season with salt and pepper. Add 1-1/2 cups hot water and cook 15 minutes longer. Add dumplings. To make dumplings, mix dry ingredients and gradually add milk. Turn dough onto a floured board, roll to 1/2 inch thickness and cut in 3 inch squares. Place on top of ingredients in kettle, cover tightly, and cook 15 minutes. Yield: 4 servings.

Have you considered transplanting a black snake to one of the trees with squirrels? It'll take a while but very effective.

Simple solution,
Go to the hardware store and buy some rat traps, screw them to a couple of trees in non-conspicuous locations, smear peanut butter on them or wire tie peanuts to them, set the traps and check them quite often. Then enjoy squirrel for supper.

Oh, I just love that ditty!

Anyone ever been to that "sleepy" little town of Pascagoula? When I lived in Biloxi and Ocean Springs, my family would camp in Gautier. We took a drive around the area and all I remember of Pascagoula was Ingalls.

Makes me want to fire up Jimmy Buffett's "Pascagoula Run".

+1 on the high power air rifle. My Gammo varmint rifle is rated at 1200 fps with alloy pellets and not too loud. Does it work? No more terrorist cells on my property!!
