Legal Limit on the Amount of Ammo You Carry?

Post by Will486 »

Hey guys, Ive been searching around for a while to try and see if there is any law dictating a legal limit to the amount of ammunition one may carry on their person, specifically while OCing. All Ive found is limits on mag capacity of pistols (20 rounds). Im planning on picking up a Glock 21 with +3 round baseplate extenders (for a total of 16 rounds per mag). Anybody know if its legal for me to carry an extra mag, that being 32 rounds? Or two extras, 48 rounds? I understand that 48 rounds is ridiculous, and I probably wouldnt carry that much, too heavy. Just wondering if it is legal.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

You can carry as much as you want on your person as you described.

I would not recommend those +3 extenders unless you replace the mag springs with some kind of aftermarket spring meant to handle those extra 3 rounds.

If you get your CPP you can go over the 20 round limit even if open carrying, also the limit only applies to the Cities of Alexandria, Chesapeake, Fairfax, Falls Church, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, or Virginia Beach or in the Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Henrico, Loudoun, or Prince William.

To clarify, CHP holders are also exempt from limitations within those cities...

The mag. springs will most likely be ok when you try them, the problem comes over time when they will or may take a set and then not work properly. You just never know. If you can get springs made just for this reason then I would do so for a carry weapon.

I like to keep it simple and light when i carry conceal, which is all the time, I come from the old school, having graduated from Ray Chapman's advance instructor course, if you know who Ray was then your as old as I am, I also taught advanced pistol techniques for the Marine Corps, one thing we learned and taught was that if you got in a confrontation with a side arm, you are in real trouble, also, and most important, if you can not stop your assailant(s) with your first shots more likely your not going to need the next magazine, you will be dead by then, my advice, practice, practice and when you think your getting good, practice some more.
