The messiah moves to control what kids eat

Unbelievable...well actually very believable given the downright socialist/fascist attitude of the current administration...

Obama wants school vending machine changes
Administration will ask Congress to rid machines of junk food

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration will ask Congress to improve childhood nutrition by ridding school vending machines of sugary snacks and drinks and giving school lunch and breakfast to more kids.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the administration will seek changes when Congress overhauls the Childhood Nutrition Act.

"Our children deserve better nutrition, and our country's better and brighter future depends on it," Vilsack said. "And with the reauthorization of the Childhood Nutrition Act scheduled this year, there won't be a better time than now to act boldly."

Vilsack's comments were in a speech he was to deliver Monday, outlining the administration's goals for school nutrition. His appearance was canceled because of snow.

The Associated Press obtained excerpts of the speech, which outlines changes the administration plans to seek in the Childhood Nutrition Act. A Vilsack spokesman said the speech would be rescheduled.

Child nutrition and obesity have emerged as key issues for the Obama administration. First Lady Michelle Obama plans to launch a campaign against childhood obesity on Tuesday.

Vilsack outlined changes that include a push to jettison cookies, cakes, pastries and salty food from school vending machines and cafeteria lines. Vilsack says schools need to help kids eat more whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

"Food served in vending machines and the a la carte line shouldn't undermine our efforts to enhance the health of the school environment," he said. "We must have the capacity to set standards for all the foods served and sold in schools."

The administration also wants to enroll more kids in school lunch programs and boost the number of schools offering breakfast. Vilsack said the administration would also push for bigger reimbursements for schools serving breakfast.

In addition, the administration is seeking to link local farmers with school cafeterias and improve parent and student education about nutrition.

Lawmakers from both parties have expressed interest child nutrition. Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, senior Republican on the Senate Agriculture Committee, met last week with Mrs. Obama to discuss the issue. Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., chairwoman of the committee, is expected to bring up reauthorization for the Childhood Nutrition Act in the coming weeks.

I don't think they are telling YOU, they are telling your kids if they are in public(government) schools. I don't have a problem with that. Have you seen the fat assed kids in school these days? The last thing they need is one more soda. I think it would be a good thing for most public (government) school pupils to eat healthier. We have a childhood obesity problem in this country. There is no denying it. I think soda should not even be sold in school. School age kids do not know whats good for them. Is it sad that the school has to get involved where the parents should be? ofcourse it is, but its also a fact of life. There is nothing wrong with substituting the candy bars with granola bars.

GS78 - i dont have a problem with us addressing the obesity problem of kids as it is an issue. What I do have is a BIG problem with the federal government stepping in. More government control is something we do not need. They need to leave this to the parents and states. And, these arent federal schools, they are local schools. We pay taxes (county and city) to support them. Yes, some get federal aid, but IMO thats more nanny crap that needs to go. Maybe congress can merely pass a resolution --

Whereas we recognize that many children are bubble butts and should stop eating twinkies and attend a fat farm...

and leave it at that...

If you recall Comrade Bloomberg in New York is making noise about regulating the amount of fat and salt restaurants can have on a menu. This is just one more step into a total "nanny state" where they want t totally regulate every aspect of our lives. It is just a case of more intervention in our lives that I do not want to see be allowed!

Believe me, I understand the argument about states , parents rights. I also understand that most of these kids are not being taught nutrition by their parents example, obesity usually runs in the family, not as a disease but as a consequence of lazy parents. I am sure you have been behind some of these people at the grocery store with a full cart of cheetos and cupcakes, 3 or 4 12 packs of orange soda or pepsi..... I mean you have to really look at the food in the cart to find anything of value. I am not advocating the fed step in and tell big momma she cant buy this or that, but IN SCHOOL, at the vending machines or cafeteria I think the school board should set the menu and rules for the vending. When did this become an issue? When mom and dad became the kids "friends" when the kids began calling their parents by first names? It surely wasn't like this when I went to grade school. Why in the world would anyone allow a minor child to make these kinds of decisions? If thats the case, most kids diets would consist of nothing but hotdogs or macaroni and cheese. I don't see this as an infringement of "our rights" to only make available nutritious snacks and food in school.

@WildBill - I think bloomberg the twit has already outlawed trans fat in NYC restaurants. Salt is his next target and he's pushing a national campaign on that one. He can go pound salt and sand AFAIC. Given all the snow they should have an abundance of that...

@GS78 - if the school board wants to regulate vending machines and food menus that's outstanding. I see that as part of their job as they are elected directly by the parents of the kids attending the schools and other taxpayers in those districts. But the feds need to stand down. Its simply not their business...

yeah, but you are comparing apples to oranges in that Bloomberg's proposal effects adults. This story is about minor children. I hate to say this but children 's "rights" should be restricted. Why all the fuss over making candy bars and pepsi available to school children who are already fat asses by the age of 10? I mean the kids today hardly even get of the couch anymore. They already have less exercise in school after we got rid of competitive games in gym class, they barely go outside after school anymore to play since video games and the internet, and since most families live in crowded cities and urban apartment complexes they dont have to "walk" more than 20 yards to their friends house anyway. If you don't think this is a major problem for the United States, just think how many of these fat assed, lazy kids are going to join and pass the physical requirements of any branch of military service when they get old enough. You have to face facts gentlemen, our kids , as a nation have been getting passed by our enemies kids in all aspects of development, from acedemic to physical fitness. We are becoming a fat dumb, lazy nation, a society of throw away everything . I'll say it again, FAT little johnny or suzie doesn't need to eat MORE JUNK FOOD, they need to eat a CARROT!

GS78 - I agree, but the real issue here is who should step forward and who should stay out. I think you nailed it with the school boards. Regarding bloomberg's (the twit) move it's still a similar issue - government control - only here - and you nailed it again - trying to tell adults what they should eat. Simply uncalled for. He certainly has some control freak issues. Maybe his momma didnt hold him on her knee long enough...
