.45 Cocked and Locked!

Post by Cartoon »

How does everyone feel about carrying .45 cal in the cocked and locked position? Just curious since I carry a kimber Ultra carry when I don't take the Glock out. Have to admit it was strange at first but I know some who won't and others that wouldn't carry anything but a .45 in that position. Thanks!

I guess it's mostly up to personal preference and comfort. What are you comfortable with? If you're comfortable carrying cocked and locked (Condition 1), then go for it. You've still got a thumb safety and a grip safety to get through before it will fire, so from a safety standpoint, it's just as safe as a DA revolver to carry. The *perception* of having it cocked and locked is the only thing that makes it seem ..ehh... "different". If you're open carrying cocked and locked, you may attract more attention from unknowledgeable people due to their perception of seeing the hammer pulled back.

I, personally, am more comfortable with my revolver.

I thought that was the only way to carry a 1911. :packin: I have seen people just about flip out when they saw someone carrying one like that.

Carrying a 1911 in any other manner makes for an effective paperweight.

I carried a Springfield TRP for years this way. To me, no other way makes sense.

I had a kimber Ultra back in the day. I did not carry it for long but when I did, it was always cocked and locked. I feel safer using the gun as it was intended to be used.

Like others have said already, there's no other way to carry a 1911 than locked and cocked. It's just something you have to get used to. :pistol:

I have to get used to carrying my Combat Commander in cocked and locked mode. I don't CC it as often; I switch between the Sig 225 and Colt Cobra 2-inch revolver because of the weight and size issues. :packin:

Cocked and locked is the only way to go.

Otherwise you might as well just carry around a really heavy steel block and throw it at someone.

Seriously, if you don't like to carry in Condition 1, probably time to get a gun with a decocker or safety.

1911 Condition 1 with 2 active safeties is "safer" than a Glock with no external safety. Both are safe since each was built to be carried their respective ways.
I carry my FNP-45 uncocked and unlocked however (DA/SA)

I carry my 1911 cocked and locked, why carry it any other way. I think the looks of the hammer back worries people for no reason.

I find it a little too heavy for a regular carry weapon so I normally only open carry one when I'm working on my own land and always in
condition 1.

Why carry an unloaded weapon, I've carried a 1911 for years like that, working and deer hunting with out a problem. I like the idea of a 45 cal if I have to dispatch some critter, it's tough to work with a rifle or shotgun.

PT 145 condition 1. Used to carry condition 3 but now I carry in
condition 1 with safety up. Was nervous at first but after thinking about
maybe not having time or being unable to use the other hand to rack the
slide I now have 1 in the chamber and just need to thumb down the safety.
The PT 145 is supposed to be "drop safe" so I don't have to worry about
45 acp in the wrong place. BTW here's a good "anti gun" video.

I dont really see it as any different than carrying a Glock w/ one in the chamber.

I have never understood why anyone would think you shouldn't carry "cocked and locked." What is it about pistols? People carry shotguns and rifles all the time "cocked and locked" and never think a thing of it. You chamber a round and put the safety on (and follow all other rules, yada, yada).

The only difference is you can't see the hammer.

When I carried my Springfield Loaded Compact, I always carried C&L. No other way makes any sense to me.

Can you just put the hammer at 1/2 cock? It cannot fire from this position unless you fully cock it later. Faster to pull hammer back to full cock than to rack and aim.

I guess the only problem with that is that you have no round in the chamber at a half cock...

I don't have my 1911-A1 anymore, but when I did I carried it with a round in the chamber and on halfcock. I was very practiced with drawing the weapon and bringing it to full cock as I place the weapon on the target for the first shot. I would be no slower then anyone that was dropping a safety with their thumb. I would use the same energy and musscle memory to bring it to full cock.
