Remington 700 308 - Short Action?
I want to get a one piece scope mount for my rifle, but I am not sure if I need a long action base or a short action base? Are all .308s short action or can .308 be used in either action?

It's a short action. Bases are different for the long action.
Re: Remington 700 308 - Short Action?
Most 700s in .308 are short actions, occasionanally they aren't, one good example of that is the M24 sniper rifle. All you need to do to tell the difference is look at the length of the magazine. If you put a round in it and it has a lot of extra room to the front or rear it is a long action. If it fits nicely, it is a short action.
Option II--
measure the distance between the forward mounting and rear mounting holes, use that to get the correct base.

Option II--

You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

So what is the distance between the holes for a short action? What is the distance between the holes for a long action? The bases that I am looking at do not call out a distance between holes. They only go by short and long action.grumpyMSG wrote:Option II--measure the distance between the forward mounting and rear mounting holes, use that to get the correct base.

If it's a stock 700 then it's a short action. The only long action .308's Iv'e ever heard of are custom guns.
