Turkey Pictures

Post by Bob »

I had a friend visiting from up north, he came to try his luck with spring gobbler, he got lucky and shot his first bird. The bird was 18 lbs, 10" beard and 1" spurs, not a huge one but nice.

My wife killed a good bird, 23 lbs, 10" beard, 1.5" spurs, she has killed quite a few decent gobblers through out the years. I was lucky and set them both up right, these birds where shot with in a half hour of each other. There was a lot of gobbling going on, I knew it was going to be a good morning.

My wife and friend with their birds. He is real happy his first gobbler, I'm sure he is back up north bragging about this hunt.

A picture of my wife with her gobbler. This is where she killed it. She is a good hunter, turkey and deer.

As usual I'm still looking for mine, I have a good track record so I know mine is on the way.

I actually had the safety off saturday but I couldn't pull the trigger, he was just at my max range and not a good clean shot, too much brush. I let him walk, I'll be out again tomorrow.

Both my wife and myself shot one in the fall so I can shoot two more and she can only shoot one more now.

Nice birds there Bob. I went out Saturday afternoon to try and call in a 'yote and walked up on one struttin' at about 150 yrads. He was huge, and had around a 12" beard. I just stood there holding my .223 thinking what an easy shot it would be if it was legal shooting hours. Maybe I can see one close up tomorrow or saturday. Nice job you did on calling those birds.

Hey Vahunter, I did call in the bird for my friend, but my wife does her own calling. I have to say that in case she reads this, she gets real touchy about that stuff. The girl can't take a joke so i have to be careful, never mess with a woman with a gun. I think there was an old country song with that title.

She takes her hunting serious.

I did roost those birds so I knew where they were, I was giving them directions at day break, now I have to do the same for my self.

It's been a few months since I've seen a yote here, I don't know why, they sure as heck didn't go away. Then again I haven't been out hunting them, I see them now and then just driving the tractor in the woods.

Vahunter did you hear about the guy in Halifax that got attacked by the bobcat, it was on channel 13 from Lynchburg. I don't have a link you can probably google it. He was calling turkey, in full camo and the cat pounced on him, he got a few pretty good cuts on his face, bad enough for stitches.

Turkey hunting could be dangerous, that cat thought he was getting a easy meal.

Yeah Bob I heard about the guy in Halifax. I would'a had to take a few nitro pills if that happened to me. :hysterical:
I finally got lucky this morning. One gobbled late it was 7:50 before he sounded off. he came out into my food plot and strutted for a couple of minutes then set his sights on my decoys. He kind'a half strutted and half ran to them. I shot him at 21 yards with a load of 3 1/2" #6's while he was beating up my jake decoy. Iv'e seen it on TV but that was the first time Iv'e that happen to me. I wish I had taken the camcorder. 21 pounds, 9 3/4" beard and 1 1/16" spurs. There is another one in the food plot gobbling now, guess where I'll be in the AM ?

Good one, nice bird, Congrats.

I had no luck today I didn't hear a gobble, it was dead here in southern Campbell county.

Nice bird you shot, he looks good.

I was waiting for a bobcat to jump on me today, that didn't happen either, I didn't even see a deer. I'll be out again tomorrow.

Vahunter what do you have planted in your food plot, mine has been dead this spring, I planted one of those wildlife mixes, the ones that have clover, chickory, oats, etc. I bought the seed in Wal Mart last fall and it worked ok for deer but no turkey this spring. The problem could be that I bought the seed in Wal Mart, it looks good to me but the turkey don't think so.

I heard 4 gobbling this morning but no luck. I did have 2 hens feeding in the food plot for a while. I had to cut the hunt short, my grandsons first t-ball game is in a little while and I can't miss that. I got my seed from wal mart too. It's Shot Plot Iv'e had pretty decent luck with it. When I can find I just plant plain old feed wheat from the farm supply but there has been a shortage of that for the past year. It's cheaper than seed wheat but the germination is just as good.

Hey Vahunter, I did see a Gobbler this morning but no shot. I'm still looking, I'll get one.

Your planting Shot Plot, I'll have to look for it, I planted some kind of wildlife mix last fall, it was good for deer, but no turkey.
I've planted feed wheat too in past years, with ok results, sometimes oats works good too, but if it gets to high you have to mow it.
Southern States Farm Store was in short supply here in Brookneal last year, for some reason.

It was hotter than hell here today, but i did get some of my garden done this afternoon. I have a ways to go yet before I'm done.
I still have two more blow downs to cut, some pines came down in the last big wind and their blocking my road to the creek bottom. I'll try to get to them monday afternoon then most of my winter clean up will be done.

I hope I get a gobbler monday morning, I got a good feeling.

Here it is the third week of the season and still no gobbler for me, I'm sad.

I saw another bearded hen today could be the same one I saw before , a legal bird but I won't shoot her. I hunted every morning so far this season and have seen a lot of turkey, but no luck, maybe tomorrow.

All I can say is it beats the Heck out of working. It's good to be retired.
