Attack on Statewide Preemption Defeated in VA Senate

Attack on Statewide Preemption Defeated!
Please Thank the Members of the Senate Local Government Committee!

On Tuesday, January 26 the Virginia Senate Local Government Committee defeated Senate Bill 268 by a vote of 9 to 6.

Sponsored by State Senator Mary Margaret Whipple (D-31), SB268 would have gutted Virginia's preemption law by allowing local governments to ban the possession of firearms on property owned or leased by the locality. It would have also applied to access roads and parking areas for those facilities.

If passed, law-abiding gun owners from all over the Commonwealth would have been caught in a patchwork of conflicting local ordinances where possession of a firearm may be legal in Rockingham, Henrico or Fairfax but prohibited in Virginia Beach, Norfolk or Arlington. SB268’s defeat will protect Virginia's preemption law and ensure that gun owners from every corner of the Commonwealth are treated equally under the law.

Please contact the members of the Senate Local Government Committee and thank them for defeating SB268. Contact information can be found below.
