Thoughts re: 20g 22lr cartridge - w/o gunpowder

Post by Fr0ntS1ght »

Anyone use this 22lr ammo made WITHOUT GUNPOWDER? Yep, just a bunch of priming mix.

Check this out: Aguila Super Colibri

I'm thinking about buying a couple boxes for June squirrel season. Looking for any feedback.

T'anks!

Aguila Super Colibri
Related question: is CCI Quiet 22 basically the same ammo as the Aguila I linked to?

Special .22 ammo so you can shoot rats in the house????

That sounds like a West Virginia joke. :hysterical: :hysterical:

I have an AirSoft rifle that looks like and AR 15. It fires semi and fully automatic with a 300 round mag cap. It shoots at 750 fps. It is way more fun than crap ammo that won't cycle your gun's action and is better for small game. Just buy one of those.

Or if you are serious about small game... try one of these...

I have one of these too. Single shot, bolt action and very consistent. If you use the hyper-coated pointed field pellets, it fires at 1,000 FPS.

Just go to a site like http://www.airsoftmegastore.com. There are hundreds of them for sale. Find one with a metal shell and gear box, then upgrade the firing assembly to a 600 FPS system, use a battery that is 2v-4v over and use .20 BBs... You'll see accurate, full-auto, 750 FPS or better for under $600.

So I'm not looking to buy another "gun" like an AirSoft -- just curious if this gunpowder-less ammo is a viable option for squirrel hunting with my bolt-action .22 rifle. I like quiet, and I'm not going to put a suppressor on my gun.

I would say in a bolt action, you should be fine. I am not 100% that 500 FPS will do the trick with penetration though. At airsoft battles we shoot each other with ammo moving about that speed and typically get bruised at worst.

I would try the sub-sonic 22 LR first. There are HP's that still have 1000+ FPS MV, but no sonic boom. 50 rounds are only $5 in most stores.

500fps will kill a squirrel just fine. Shot plenty of them with a Russian target air pistol. However, your range will be limited and bullet placement becomes more critical. CCI Quiets still have powder in them and they are a lot quieter than regular .22lr, but still sound like a loud cap gun as long as the barrel is >16" give or take.

Velocity is a critical factor when penetrating armor because of the way most armor is designed to spread the energy outwards. Higher velocity equals shorter duration to spread the energy; aka higher impulse which breaks the local bonds of the armor. Penetration of soft tissue is mostly a function of momentum and surface area. 500fps airsoft pellets have very little mass and thus very little momentum which translates to rapid deceleration of the projectile (relative given a Cd) and lack of penetration. Paintballs have higher mass and thus better momentum, but much larger surface area. Most SD handguns (even the mighty .45) only have the energy of a 10lbs weight dropped 1"; spread out the energy isn't a big deal, concentrate it in a bullet and it will penetrate.

Craft your own with .22 Hornet cases, a primer and a .22 pellet.
