Ruger SR1911

Post by OldEagle »

I've been looking for an economical 1911 for a range gun. I'd heard good things about Ruger's 1911. As I was driving to work the other day, I was listening to the story about the travails NOVAFirearms had been having trying to open a new location in Arlington. I'd never been to their shop in McLean, so I decided to pay a visit. On the shelf was a used Ruger 1911. It looked virtually new, probably less than 100 rounds through it. I bought it. Today I took it to the range. Best target, 25 ft, slow fire, 5 rounds, attached. That's a pretty good pistol to have paid less than $600 for...

Good shooting. I am a fan of Ruger's and I really like their 1911's. Sub $600 seems like a good deal. Congrats on a nice pick up.

I'm already on record on the Ruger SR1911: Best 1911 for the money even at full MSRP, IMO. Congratulations on a good choice.

Nice shooting!

I have a small collection of 1911s, but I've always liked the Rugers - it's on the "list" so I'll probably end up buying one when I see one and nothing else is speaking to me... Too many good things said about them to not own one!

Thanks guys...
A few more notes:
- Price was $550 plus tax
- Ammo used was PMC Bronze 230 gr FMJ--so decent ammo but certainly not match grade
- I brought along a full size Sig 1911 and alternated shooting strings. I was very surprised that my groups with the Ruger were consistently tighter. Both the Sig & Ruger have very clean breaking triggers; the trigger weight on the Ruger was bit heavier, and the recoil spring on the Ruger stiffer (more force to rack).

So your SR1911 was the commander size? It's funny, but I find that commanders are just as accurate and no harder to handle as to recoil and muzzle flip than 5-inch 1911s. You'd expect a lighter gun & shorter barrel to be less well-behaved, but if it is I can't tell it. Pretty much the same with the officer size, too. Must be the ergonomics of the 1911. Old J. Moses got a lot of stuff right way back when......

The SR1911 is full size too--so the comparison to the Sig was like to like. I guess all-around I was just surprised by how good the SR1911 is--it wasn't what I expected. I think the Sig 1911s are excellent--but they are also about $200 to $300 more expensive.

Thanks!
I've had it for over a year now, and have shot it a lot more. For whatever reason, for me, it consistently shoots more accurately than either of my 1911 Sigs or my Dan Wesson 9mm--all of which are very good, and all of which have excellent barrels and triggers. I think it is just a great pistol.

My Ruger 1911 is the only 1911 that I purchased "USED" . It was in factory box and had all paperwork . I got it from a gentleman who bought it new and decided he didn't need it....I didn't quite get the deal you did but , I did get 3 extra mags. and about 300 rds. of ammo. I paid $775 and still to this day , I feel like it was a great deal. I thought the trigger was pretty heavy so I worked on it a little and now it shoots really smooth. Congrats on your purchase....I know you will enjoy it for a long time. :pistol:
