I received my first an only conviction in the State of New Jersey about 12 years ago for possession of a firearm without a permit. This year my conviction was expunged by the courts in New Jersey and my rights restored. My attorney said it could take up to six months for the State and Federal databases to be updated.
Here is my question. I wanted to go to a firearm shop here in Virginia and have them run my background check to see if I would be prevented from purchasing a firearm. A friend told me that he would be concerned that if it came back denied that I would possibly end up facing charges.
Does anyone have insight on this? and how I can keep from inadvertently getting myself in trouble by doing some process or procedure incorrectly?
Thanks

Wait for your lawyer to say it's ok or you can start writing checks to him again. Know you are eager. Let him say when!!!!

Under federal law if you're a prohibited person and know it and attempt to purchase a firearm you're violating the law. Unfortunately, having a court record that proves your rights were restored won't help you in the LGS. The don't know the details, and are likely the ones that would report you to LEO if the background check came back as denied. I agree with what was said already. Wait for your lawyer to give you the green light, but ask him to run your background before you attempt to purchase so he can ensure you're good to go. It'll also demonstrate to him that he did his job successfully.
