VCDL VA-ALERT: Veto Override - Contact your Rep!

Post by allingeneral »

########### VCDL MESSAGE ############

Time is short - you need to contact your Senator and Delegate and ask them to override all of the vetoes on gun bills this year.

As usual, we have made this super simple. Click on the links below to send a pre-written message to YOUR Senator and YOUR Delegate. The computer will figure out who your Senator and Delegate are based on your address and your Zip+4.

**The veto override session is on April 8th, so we need to get cracking on this NOW!**

To email your Senator, click here: http://tinyurl.com/d3ozr9

To email your Delegate, click here: http://tinyurl.com/c3hzln

Let's roll - we can do this!

I followed the links in the email earlier today. It only took about a minute to complete each form and generate a message to my local representatives. There's no reason why everyone can't do this ASAP! :bigthumb:

Here's the response I got back from the Speaker of the House (28th District).
Bill Howell - Virginia Speaker of the House of Delegates wrote: Thank you for your email. I voted for each of the Bills and will vote to override the Governor's vetoes.

My delegate says he voted for the bills and will vote to override the veto. My senator just sends me lots of :spammer: .

I wonder what my wife will think when she sees that she emailed her delegate and senator.

Just a reminder that the VA General Assembly meets this Wednesday to consider overriding our spineless, weasel of a governor's veto. It's not too late to contact your legislators today. You can read the article below for more information on the bills up for consideration.

My apologies to any four-legged weasels that may have been offended by the above mentioned comments.

Why do I get the feeling my Delegate is giving me double talk because he plans to vote against the veto?

The initial Bill vote in the House:

Subject: RE: Override Veto of SB1035

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Governor's veto of SB
1035. It was good hearing from you.

You may be assured I will review the Governor's veto carefully
and will take into consideration the concerns you've expressed before I cast
my vote.

Again, I appreciate your alerting me to your interest in the
actions taken by the Governor. If ever there is anything I can do for you,
please don't hesitate to let me know.
Respectfully,
David

Hmmm...that response sounds a bit ambiguous to me.

Here is the verdict. Terrible, SB1035 failed. You still have to Open Carry in a
place the serves alcohol.

Today, the General Assembly overrode Governor Tim Kaine's (D) veto of
two pro-gun bills.

Senate Bill 877 will allow "retired" law enforcement officers to carry
concealed in a restaurant that serves alcoholic beverages. Unlike Senate
Bill 1035, this bill applies only to retired law enforcement officers.
The Senate voted to override the Governor by a vote of 30-10 with the
House voting 76-22 to override.

Senate Bill 1528 will allow a safety course required for obtaining a
concealed handgun permit, conducted by a state-certified or
NRA-certified firearms instructor to be done electronically or online.
The Senate voted 28-12 to override with the House concurring 73-23.

Unfortunately, the Senate failed to override the veto of Senate Bill
1035, House Bill 1851, and House Bill 2528.

SB1035 would have permitted a Right-to-Carry permit holder to carry
concealed in a restaurant, provided he or she did not consume alcohol.
The bill failed to pass by a 24-16 vote.

HB1851 would have exempted active duty military personnel or Virginia
National Guardsmen from Virginia's "one-gun-a-month" law on handgun
purchases. HB1851, which passed the House in the override session by a
vote of 73-26, failed in the Senate by a vote of 26 to 14 (27 votes were
needed for an override).

HB2528 would have established that no locality or entity may participate
in a gun "buyback" program where individuals are given anything of value
or money in exchange for surrendering a firearm to the locality unless
the governing body first passes an ordinance authorizing the gun
"buyback." The legislation also required that any locality holding gun
"buybacks" sell the firearms to a federally licensed dealer "or be
disposed of in any appropriate manner" if they could not be sold.
HB2528 passed the House 71-28 only to be defeated in the Senate by a
vote of 24-16.

This is disappointing, but not surprising given Kaine's new job waiting for him with the DNC. As soon as he's gone, we'll regroup and try it again. At some point, common sense will prevail.

My rep voted for 877 but against 1035. I sent an email encouraging him to vote for 1035 and received no reply whatsoever. I WILL remember this in the next election.
Why wouldn't you hold up the targets for me? It's a 9mm.

You hit the nail on the head. The Law begins with We The People. And the best way to change any law is to get We The People
on your side, one neighbor at a time.
