Kentucky shooting fuels debate on allowing guns in schools

FRANKFORT, KY.
Hours after authorities say a 15-year-old student shot and killed two classmates at a western Kentucky high school, a Republican senator in the state's Capitol rushed to file a bill intended to prevent future tragedies by putting more guns in schools.

The legislation from state Sen. Steve West would let local districts hire armed marshals to patrol public schools, make citizen's arrests and protect people from "imminent death or serious physical injury." Marshals wouldn't have to be police officers, but school district employees in good standing who have a license to carry concealed weapons.

That would be great. The schools in my area have county police on duty during school hours. I would support having a private citizen with a CHP/CCP protecting the school. I hope it passes.

I would prefer armed citizens at the schools, as opposed to a police force patrolling the schools. They already build the schools to look like prisons; having a heavy police force doesn't help things.

Arming citizens who are already there is better for the budget, too. And, is a better reflection of original intent.

True. You don't see too many undercover law enforcement personnel. Having CC would likely be more effective providing it wasn't too late to prevent a shooting. The visibility of LE may prevent a shooting and encourage a shooter to go somewhere else. A CC might be too late but could also stop the perp.

I think the key to success in this situation is to have signs posted and let everyone one there are undercover armed security on premises. Make it very public. This won't "out" your undercover security staff and that security person or persons will continue to have the tactical advantage of anonymity. However, everyone will know that there is someone there to contend with.

Yes, what Marc said. Common knowledge of an armed presence would be as best a deterrent as you could get, especially if it's unknown who's armed, and who's not.

Personally, I'd go as far as to select students to carry, as well, but I don't imagine that we've gotten far enough for that suggestion to be taken seriously.
