I am now ready to get my CWP, but whats the best way to do?

Post by TonyInVa »

I now feel comfortable getting my CWP, after debating it for about three years. I have done a lot of educating my self and understand the extreme responsibility it carries. I have been shooting for over 30 years, but have never taken any formal training. Im sure I could benefit from it, who couldnt? Should I look at getting my CWP on line or go through a local gun shop that offers it? If I go through an online course, which one?

Thanks ahead of time.

you say you've debated it for 3 years, and done a lot of educating, but then say you haven't taken any formal training. You can certainly gain knowledge from self study, but the likelihood that you've gained good physical skills from self study and with out coaching from trained instructors is less likely.

So whats your goal? Comply with the law and get the permit, or become more knowledgeable, more skilled and get the permit? Your post seems to be speaking in both directions at the same time, and I don't know which way you are trying to go.

I always suggest classes. Its rare that I go to one and don't learn something. Its rare that I teach one and don't pick something up from fellow instructors, students, or both.

VA's training requirement is VERY weak.

One of the 'qualifying' training options is:

Code: Select all

Completing any firearms training or safety course or class, including an electronic, video, or on-line course, conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association-certified firearms instructor;
If bubba is a NRA instructor, and he offers a class that only teaches 1 rule, "treat every firearm as if it were loaded" and it takes 1 minute to view 1 power-point slide, you've met your training requirement.

Was it a good class, did you learn a lot, does it meet the state training requirement?

I'm somehow in same boat. I got my CHP, but I try to train more. However, range is too static and you can go up to a point. Trainer courses are good, but happen only once, and without practice is not worth much.
I had one IDPA match so far, but I'd like more. Any open place in a squad, for someone willing to train 2-3 times a month? I can travel like 50-60 miles if necessary.

Where you are located might affect the replies. I'm in New Castle (north of Roanoke) and have a recommendation.

Rob Tackett I believe teaches the Law Enforcement. He is not expensive but very comprehensive classes. I had my CWP but took a class anyway just to expand my learnings. It was $25.00 and well spent.
