Another Gun....

Post by Jon »

Old beater Ruger P95. Picked it up from the LGS for $200 and couldn't pass it up.

It looks as if it was definitely carried a lot, IDK if this was issued to an LE or what but it's been used for sure. Overall I'd call it "fairly good" condition aesthetically, but it functions very well. Took it straight to the range as my wife and I were going anyway, and put a box of 50 through it to check function. No issue except the slide wouldn't lock back on last round. When I got home and broke it down I found out why. This thing was disgusting on the inside. I don't know when the last time this thing was cleaned but it looked like it had done a few tours in the sandbox or something. I'm really surprised it even functioned at all. Gave it a very thorough and much needed cleaning and presto, slide locks back every time now.

I have pretty limited experience with DA anything, and the few guns I have shot that were DA were wheel guns. The DA on this gun is HEAVY. The SA is a pleasure to shoot. This will be a range toy so I'm not too worried about mastering the combo of trigger pulls, although it will be fun to practice.

Overall I'm happy with the gun for what I got it for. And for now at least, I can check off adding a DA/SA to the collection.

To sum it up, then, you picked up a pretty reliable pistol, that can take a lot of abuse, for $200? Good deal.

Given its apparent ruggedness, I might be inclined to upgrade its status from "range toy" to "backup truck gun", or something similar in nature. Also, if you're inclined to hunt, that seems like a good sidearm to carry, especially if your hunting trips take place in areas where falling into a mud holes is a possibility. Or, you could take it on camping or hiking expeditions. Just a thought; it just seems a bit of a waste to keep such a rugged device in the safe.

Either way, looks like a great deal that you found. Congratulations on the recent acquisition.

Thanks, and that's worthwhile advice. However, I'd have to get A LOT more comfortable with the DA trigger to even remotely consider carrying it in any capacity.

I have a couple of carry guns that I am fairly proficient with and confident enough with. Being a DA/SA this gun would require entirely new training to get where I'm already at with my others.

I just wanted a DA/SA to have one. I have many others on my list of guns "just to have", and do not plan on using for SD/carry.

In DA mode I probably couldn't hit the broad side of a barn at 100yds. ;)
