CHP in Arlington ?

Post by babarsac »

I'm getting ready to move to Arlington and am planning on getting my CHP once there. While looking at the Arlington County website for the application process I noticed that I needed a "certificate of competency" since I'm a new applicant.

Is this some sort of letter of recommendation? I'm a little confused by what they mean. Any Arlington residents here with some insight?

In order to get a CHP in Virginia, you have to prove that you have received handgun safety training. If you take an appropriate firearms training course, they will then issue a certificate to you, a certificate of competancy.

We are based in Richmond and would be happy to assist you with your training needs.

If you've ever been in the military a DD 214 works just fine.

But only if you were honorably discharged.

This link to the Virginia State Police website has a list of acceptable documentation that serves as proof of competency.

"My First Pistol" class counts, just BTW. However, be warned that they WILL take the maximium allowed time to issue your permit. I had to get a temp from them after the time limit expired.

The wording "certificate of competancy" is a little scary....almost like you have to go see Maj. Hasan at walter reed first and get his approval........

I would say "Duh!" but that would be crass. And you are absolutely correct. If anybody plans on using a DD214 with anything other than an honorable discharge please be advised you'll set yourself up for a fall.
