BTW - I don't consider this an "alarm" but rather a trigger for something much more alarming.
Also they don't show how it's mounted to the tree. I suspect hot glue but a thin nail down the center of the clothespin spring would work.

Yes, an arsonist might find an application for it. As an indication of a presence a flashlight bulb would be as visible for a much longer time with an opportunity to reuse the mechanism.

Be on the look out for these if you're a hunter. Someone I know via online forums that's a DGIF employee/ranger mentioned they have found some of these on trails in the WMAs.

BTW: the same setup with an aspirin tablet between the contacts makes a great remote sensor for flooding of a hard to get to location.

Also, if I were in the mood to make and use such a device, which I'm not currently I certainly WOULDN"T use red string.
I happen to have a large spool of very strong tire cord (heavy polymer thread) that is khaki in color and would be close to invisible in a typical outdoor setting.

Lol, I had a similar thought about the red string; I just assumed it to be for demonstration purposes.

I'd like to think that I am clever enough to camouflage that whole setup a little better than what is shown.
