1911 .40 s&w

Post by Snakester »

I'm looking for another 1911 and since I don't have one in .40 S&W I have been doing some research. I don't see many and most dealers tell me they are few and far between. I have a RIA TCM .22 that I really like and shoot a lot and I have been looking at their 51782 17 rd. .40 . I'm told the Ruger doesn't come in .40 and I really don't want to go to the expense of a Kimber. I'm going to take a while and look around and try to find a .40 that I really want to enjoy !

Why not get an RIA in 10mm, then swap in a 40 barrel? I do believe I have seen and read several accounts of that conversion being done with great success. It may also require a couple of new mags for absolute reliable function, but on the bonus side a spring swap back and you also have a 10mm too.

P.S. I have seriously consider going this route as I don't have an issue shooting a full house 10 in the 1911 platform, and I still remember the days when some people complained that the 10mm 1911 was too harsh. I didn't think so, but I also shot plenty of big bore hand cannons back then too. (Dan Wesson 445 Super Mag and others in that same power range)

I have actually talked to a guy at Bob's about that very thing. I wouldn't mind having a 10 with a .40 barrel. My TCM .22 has a 9 mm barrel and I have to say it is a great gun. RI also makes a .45 with a .22 conversion so I am pretty sure the 10/.40 should be right sweet too. I have been mainly thinking of a .40 1911 because I have recently sold the 2 - .40 's that I had that I didn't like . I just prefer the 1911. And I have about 15K rds. of .40 .

I agree with you, as I too think a 40 cal 1911 would be a rocking combo. I do greatly enjoy my 45 cal 1911, and a buddies 38 super, so why the heck not a 40. Plus that would also open the door for a 357 Sig conversion too if I understand that cartridges basic design. If I'm not out there too far I remember someone I believe at Bobs describing the 357 Sig as a 40 necked down to 357. The wife has one of the Sig's that I can get the 9, 357 Sig, and 40 cal top ends for as it's currently in 22 but it's the full size model.

I know you can order some 1911s in .40 cal, but I never have; and I've never run across one for sale. Probably would buy one if I did just to have one in that caliber. I've shot them in .45, 9mm, .22LR, .22TCM and .38Super, but not .40 or 11mm. Something left to look for.

My brother in law has a Kimber in .40 but it has a 31/2" barrel and is pretty snappy when fired. I talked to my buddy that is a dealer and he is working on a RIA model 51782 for me . He's pretty sure he can come up with one. Maybe a week , maybe a month . I really like my RIA TCM.22 /9mm and shoot it all the time. I feel pretty confident with RI and feel that a .40 1911 would be a great shooter! I've got about 20k rds. of .40 and nothing to feed it to !

The 51782 is a double-stack. It's hard to find. But I can easily get other single-stack (8+1) RIA models in .40 S&W.

Sounds nice! Sorry you couldn't find exactly what you were looking for, but the Ruger SR series is pretty good. I wish I had some time to come hang out. Hopefully we can soon.

We took the new Rugers and a few other pistols out shooting Saturday and Sunday. I shot 600 rds. In the SR40 and must say I really enjoyed it . Shot great and ate all different kinds of ammo. No issues at all. Carol shot about 500 rds. In the SR22 and after tweeting the sights a little , became pretty deadly at 12 yds. I do think she still likes her Sig 1911 .22 best !

Carol picked up 5 - 15 Rd. mags. for the SR40 earlier this week. Today I put 200 rds. through it and plan on shooting quite a bit this weekend . I've cleaned it twice so far and have to say Ruger does build a very nice pistol. They must have a very good Quality Control Dept.
