Just a thought...
This forum should rightfully be called "Hampton Roads". Tidewater consists of the south side while the Peninsula is, well, the peninsula. (Hampton Roads is actually the area of water in between the Peninsula and Tidewater. The confluence of the James and Elizabeth rivers and Chesapeake Bay.)

WNOR and WAVY radio stations both described their audience as the "Tidewater Region". That has been the way I have thought of it since that time. Several specific locations within that region.

Greatlink! Seems most of us call it, "Virginia Beach area". I don't think it is inclusive enough so I'm still going for the number 2 choice, "Hampton Roads".

When I got here in '69, everyone used "Tidewater" to refer to this region. Durnig the 70's those with political motives and influence started making noises about Tidewater sounding too much like Backwater (or Jerkwater), and the contest was on for a more PC moniker. Given our traffic woes during the same peroid, I'm still at a loss to figure out how Hampton Roads came out on top. Tom Clancy used Tidewater at least once in his fiction, and I think Tom Selleck's Thomas Magnum character called Tidewater home. "Tidewater" is a good nickname, "Hampton Roads" placates those who find shame in the name.

Tidewater makes sense to me, even if it is rather vague.
Hampton Roads, on the other hand, never made sense to me.
Of course, I've spent more time in Williamsburg than anywhere else. Williamsburg is just kinda "there"; just far enough from the Richmond area to not be lumped in with them, and just far enough from the Norfolk/Va Beach area to not be part of that group, either. So, Tidewater, Hampton Roads... which ever. Matters not to me.
