I've received a lot of emails with questions about yesterday's VA-ALERT, "Federal Candidate Survey Results". Instead of answering each individual email, I'm posting the answers here, since many more of you may have the same questions.

1. VCDL can not & does not endorse candidates for public office.
VCDL-PAC is a state level Political Action Committee (PAC) and can & does endorse candidates for state or local office. But since VCDL-PAC is not a federal PAC, it can *not* and does *not* make endorsements for federal office, nor does it get involved in any way with federal races.

2. No candidates were rated. To rate a candidate, one needs to factor in a lot of information, including, but not limited to the following:

-- how they answered the survey
-- their voting record (if any)
-- legal actions they've been involved in (if any)
-- their public statements (if any)
-- their private statements (if any)

3. The "grade" shown next to a candidate's name is HOW THEY ANSWERED THE SURVEY. Their survey response was graded and the grade (Very Pro-Gun, Pro-Gun, So-So, Anti-Gun, Very Anti-Gun) was displayed, as we have been doing for the last 8+ years. If "--" appears next to a candidate's name, then they did not return the survey.

4. VCDL does not have a secret survey. We publish the survey questions so the voters know the questions being asked of the candidates. The current federal survey can be found at:
https://www.vcdl.org/2016-Federal-Candidate-Survey

5. While VCDL publishes the survey grade well before the General Election, the exact Yes/No answers to the survey will not be published until shortly before the General Election. This is the procedure VCDL has been following for the last 8+ years.

I hope this answers most of your questions. With that in mind, here is the VA-ALERT with the qualitative assessment on how the candidates answered the VCDL 2016 Federal Candidate Survey:

-----

VCDL has surveyed the Democrat and Republican candidates for President.

The VCDL 2016 Federal Candidate Survey can be viewed at:
https://www.vcdl.org/2016-Federal-Candidate-Survey

So far, the responses to the Survey are:

DEMOCRAT

Hillary Clinton --
Bernie Sanders --

REPUBLICAN

Ben Carson --
Ted Cruz Pro-Gun
John Kasich --
Marco Rubio --
Donald Trump Very Pro-Gun

Note: If any more candidates return a completed survey before the Tuesday, March 1, 2016 Primary, I will update this message.
