Shifting support

Post by Swampman »

My brother sent me this piece today.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articl ... 29669.html

I watched the debate (if you can call it that) prior to the most recent one, which Trump declined to attend because he was sulking over Megan Kelly being one of the moderators. At the start of the debate I was about 90% in Cruz's camp for many of the same reasons as Sowell talks about. After witnessing Cruz's whining at Chris Wallace about the tenor and substance of his questions, my opinion of Cruz dropped considerably. With Trump not in attendance, Cruz was the defacto front-runner, and should have expected the additional scrutiny. I understand his point regarding the media and the way they phrase their questions, but he needs to get over it.

While I like Rubio, and have enjoyed his ability to speak intelligently and without prompting, he has been somewhat disappointing in the debates. He has been "handled" into performing in a robotish manner on stage, that leaves him vulnerable to attacks and stammering, repetitive replies. Not a good characteristic when facing down world leaders with an ego as big as Putin.

Cruz has been getting a lot of press regarding his evangelical ties, but that doesn't bother me so much. As long as he makes sure our 1st amendment right to freedom "of" religion doesn't morph into a freedom "from" religion that the left covets. Appearance means a lot, and I am having a hard time with Cruz's cold, dark eyes. Snake-oil salesman comes to mind. But, I guess Trump has him beat in that department.

I didn't like Rubio's adventures with the so-called "Gang of Eight" and his support for some type of amnesty. He has moderated that view somewhat in response to the criticism, but how do we know he won't end up back in that camp if he is elected? Deporting them all doesn't seem like a viable option, just from the sheer magnitude of the task and the societal turmoil it would cause. I don't care if Rubio, or any other Republican works with the Democrats on issue, as long as the country doesn't suffer because of it.

Finally, Sowell hits upon the real reason that will cause those voters who pay attention (a.k.a. - the minority) to rethink who they might back in the primaries and in the general. I can tell you that the gun crowd is scared to death of what might happen. I'm sure Senator McConnell is being bombarded by gun owners and the organizations they support, to flip Obama the bird regardless of who he nominates. Sending anything to our senators is pointless. I plan to start calling McConnell's office soon to voice my opinion.

I'm back to being evenly split between Cruz and Rubio. Their words and actions between now and March 1st will have a big impact on who I support in the primary.
