Built a new hunting rifle

Post by tangodown »

So I posted this on another Forum, and it turns out it was full of trolls, and a$$hats who just wanted to talk down to me and hate on it cause its a 7.62x39 AR. Then the one guy was like this is what you get for bragging about your gun, well this is what I built:

So I had it in my head the other day to get me a new hunting rifle. So I went and shopped, and shopped, and look some more online. Bolt actions, levers, pumps, break actions even semi autos. Nothing of the traditional way was doing it for me.... Then the woman called asking me to teach her how to shoot and use my AR. Then the light came on AR build! So then I went caliber shopping, not a 5.56 already got one of them, 6 mils never been a bug fan of, 300 black outs lol I'm not that rich lol. Nice bullet tho. So wheres that leave me?..... 7.62x39, the hated AK round. Lets see .311 caliber good to about 400m, can be very accurate up to 400m, has 550+ pound feet of energy at 400m. Cheap easy to find both bulk/ hunting ammo and build parts. So this is what I built, a fun hunting rifle. It will do the business anything from varmint, to Bore and Coyotes, up to most big game here in the lower 48.

Nice job. I think you chose good components where it counts. Please let us know how it shoots - some target photos at 100 yds would be quite interesting.

I've always said the 7.62X39 round should be a great little deer cartridge (or hog cartridge, for that matter).

Magazines might be an issue. You can get AR type magazines for 7.62X39 but only from one or two makers. Unless you bought one of those lowers that takes AK47 magazines????

If so, people bad mouth the Tapco magazines, but so far neither my brother nor I have had one malfunction or break. We don't run over them with our trucks, or beat them with a hammer, etc.

Check out Lucky Gunner for ammo. I can't recommend any particular brand/bullet for deer hunting.

I can tell you that you'll need to try different brands/bullets to see what your rifle shoots well.

My SIG 556R likes Wolf 122 grain bullets best. My brother's rifle shoots Tula 122 grain better. The best groups he's had are from Silver Bear soft point ammo (I don't remember the bullet weight).

The only issue I've read about with that caliber in AR15's is sometimes the bolt lugs may break off. keep an eye out for cracks. It might even be a good idea to buy a spare bolt (not the carrier and all, just the bolt) just in case.

Did you use a standard hammer spring? I don't have an AR15 in 7.62X39 but my S&W M&P15 in 5.45X39 has an extra power hammer spring in it to insure primer ignition with Russian ammo (hard primers). If you didn't get an extra power hammer spring and have some misfires, that may be a reason.

it is... our .30-30 has been putting them in freezers for generations. the 7.62x39 isn't much different in projectile size/energy.

The only minus in my book because I'm a re-loader, is the .311 bore is much harder to find a good selection of projectiles vs the more common 308 bore.

I got the dedicated C Products and ASP 7.62x39 Mags, 2 10 rounders and 2 20 rounders. I have to be able to legally hunt in NYS. I Plan is to run as much and as many hunting rifle brands threw it as I can after i get it sighted in next weekend. I am putting it on paper with 7.62 Russian surplus. the we well go from there. I am thinking the Hornaday and or Federals should be the best for..... Like I said I will post pictures up after I dial it in.

The triger group is MIL-SPEC, it has been polished.

" If you didn't get an extra power hammer spring and have some misfires, that may be a reason." This... definitely.

YUP! One of the guys that used to go camping with us used an "AR-47" as we called it... Nice distance, good grouping, and a HEAVY bullet!

It's a perfect hog, or deer rifle!

That flat top is BEGGING for a decent piece of glass! You get that? Something's going in the freezer! Guaranteed!
