ROANOKE, Va. -
Sunday, dozens of people lined a street in our area with their firearms to show their support for the second amendment.
Folks met up along Orange Avenue, near the Berglund Center, in Roanoke. Many said their rights are under fire and want to show others why it's so important.
"To me it's important,” Joanna St. Clair said. “I'm a mother. I have four children and I like to be able to have that right to protect my children should the need arise. "
Many like Joanna showed up carrying a firearm. She and others gathered on the sidewalk Sunday afternoon to support their right to bear arms, and they got support from people driving by.
Kelly Bowles said, "The people that drive by, they honk horns and wave and everything and it's wonderful."
Daniel Highberger, who organized the event, said, "I was tired of waiting for somebody else to organize an event like this."
He says he wanted to get law abiding gun owners together in one spot.
"This is a peaceful demonstration to prove once and for all, guns do not kill people,” Highberger said. “Bad people kill people. "
He feels like second amendment rights are currently being infringed upon across the country.
"I would like to get to the point where people are so used to seeing somebody with a firearm that they don't have to be in fear for their life anymore,” Highberger said.
It's a hot-button topic that hits close to home for everyone who showed up, including Joanna St. Clair.
She said, “I feel as though if you take away one right you're taking away all of them. You're putting all of our rights in danger."
The group says they're thinking about continuing to meet like this each month.
