Local gun rights group to form response after recent audit on Virginia's concealed carry permit agreement WRIC Newsroom
Published: December 29, 2015, 4:56 am
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – One week after Virginia’s attorney general announced the Commonwealth will no longer recognize some out-of-state handgun permits, a pro-gun rights group will meet.
The Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) is holding a public meeting tonight after Virginia revoked its handgun permit agreement with 25 states.
Last week, Attorney General Mark Herring said his office, along with state police, completed the audit of the 30 states Virginia had concealed carry agreements with. Herring said 25 of those 30 states didn’t meet Virginia’s standards when it came to carrying a concealed handgun.
In Virginia, some of the disqualifications for getting a concealed handgun permit include people with restraining orders, anyone who has been convicted of two or more misdemeanors and people under certain mental health conditions.
Herring said that if states didn’t meet those standards, their concealed carry permits could not be recognized in the Commonwealth. If someone from one of the state’s that’s been revoked is caught carrying concealed in Virginia, they could have their guns seized by law enforcement. The attorney general said he’s required by state law to make sure concealed handgun permit holders meet Virginia’s standards.
VCDL will go over the implications of that audit at its meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Glen Allen Library, 10501 Staples Mill Road.
Other topics that will be covered are VCDL’s strategy for the upcoming Lobby Day and the Executive Order 50 that was issued by Governor Terry McAuliffe in October.
