Crud. I just found the origins of "by and large" and "taken aback", and now I have to work on the messages therein.

OK, the good Dr. was caught in a fabrication of word usage leading to my research of the phrase. The Aubrey/Maturin books are great entertainment...The Ionian Mission had me rolling.
