I’ve just got word, and confirmed, that Hopewell City Council is going to push to have the General Assembly grant them the power to ban guns from their Municipal Building and at their City Council meetings!

This is similar to what Newport News City Council tried, but backed away from, recently.

However, in this case Hopewell City Council wants to have the General Assembly change their CITY CHARTER to allow the ban.

While this would only affect Hopewell initially (if it were passed by the General Assembly), it would set a terrible precedent that could affect all of us.

Tomorrow night, the Hopewell City Council is going to have a closed meeting and we need to bombard them NOW with emails to take that item off the agenda.

If it is not removed, I will call for a big turnout when the item comes up for public comment on Tuesday, December 1st at 6:30 PM, so mark your calendars for now.

URGENT ACTION ITEM

Send an email IMMEDIATELY to the Hopewell City Council urging them to drop the gun ban from the agenda. You should be able to email all the City Council members at one time by pasting the list into the To: field (make sure there are no added return characters in the list when you paste it into your email program).

Email addresses: clumanbailey@gmail.com, arleneholloway52@gmail.com, zandzinc@juno.com, gore4ward4@gmail.com, wwalton534@aol.com, pelhamward6councilor@gmail.com, jshornak@hotmail.com

Suggested subject: NO gun bans in City buildings and City Council meetings!

Suggested message:

I urge you to OPPOSE AND REMOVE item number 7 on the public hearing agenda for December 1st, which requests a change to the City’s charter for purposes of banning guns in the City Municipal Building and at City Council meetings!

All but two of the public mass shootings since the 1950s have been in “gun-free zones,” which is exactly what item 7 would create.

Terrorists and criminals will ignore your gun ban. It is the citizens who will be left to pay the price, if an attack occurs.

Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME ONLY]
