Accuracy queston

Just read about the officers chasing a robber and shooting 85 times -- missing all but once. There is no mention of at what distance they were at.

I thought (past tense) that I was a reasonable shot. But as I read here and other forums, gun reviews, magazine articles there seem to be many that can shoot a 2-3" shot group at 25 yards (75 feet) consistently. Is this true or a stretch? Is someone using a different tape measure than I may be?

25 yards is a long ways for a 9MM or bigger pistol for 2-3" groups open sights -- isn't it?

Hitting a stationary paper target from a stable shooting position is very different than "real life".
Shooting on the move, shooting a moving target, shooting under stress - all VERY hard to do with any measure of accuracy. It takes practice, and lots of it.
Shooting good groups at 25 yards does indeed demonstrate a high level of skill. Shooting 2-3" groups from 25 yards demonstrates mastery. (Note: most gun mags shoot 25 yard tests from a pistol rest, not standing).

But, a person that has never tried to hit a moving target, or even harder, to hit a target while they themselves are moving - will be shocked at how inaccurate they are.

My suggestion, find a local IDPA or USPSA match and give it a go.
