Massive Taurus Safety Settlement
Massive Taurus Safety Settlement Could Include 100,000 Pistols
.
By Bob Owens
.
Though it seems to largely be flying under the radar, a $39 million class action settlement by Taurus Firearms could impact up to 100,000 handguns with alleged safety design issues:
.
Brazil-based handgun maker Forjas Taurus SA has agreed to a $39 million settlement in a class action lawsuit alleging some of the company’s most popular semi-automatic handguns can discharge when dropped and have a defective safety that allows the gun to fire even when it’s engaged.
.
According to court documents filed May 15 in a U.S. District Court in Florida, the company has agreed to pay up to $30 million to owners of nine separate handgun models who opt to send their pistols back, with owners receiving anywhere from $150 to $200 for their pistols depending on how many choose that option.
.
The agreement also will extend the warranty for the nine handgun models, allowing gun owners to send the pistols back to have the handguns inspected by Taurus technicians and address the “safety defects” alleged in the suit. Documents show the settlement could include as many as 100,000 handguns.
.
The settlement also calls for a maximum $9 million in attorney’s fees.
.
A Taurus official confirmed the settlement agreement, arguing the company does not admit any wrongdoing.
.
The settlement includes the following pistols.
PT-111 Millennium
PT-132 Millennium
PT-138 Millennium
PT-140 Millennium
PT-145 Millennium
PT-745 Millennium
PT-609
PT-640
PT-24/7
.
The safety issues do not apparently affect the older metal frame pistols based upon Beretta designs, nor the G2 models.
.
See if your handgun is on the list of this $39 million class action settlement.

Does anyone know what course of action that those of us with these pistols need to take to rectify the situation?

I have a PT-145 Millennium pro, keep it in the glove compartment. Is the pro included?

I'm curious to hear what VGOF Taurus owners have to say. What was your personal reason for purchasing a Taurus striker-fired pistol? Price, concealability, model reliability, gifted, mix of factors?

I am also curious if the Pro model is included.
The main reason I purchased my PT-111 Millennium Pro was the way it fit my hand. The grip was much more comfortable than other pistols that I tried. The price didn't hurt either.WVUBeta1904 wrote:I'm curious to hear what VGOF Taurus owners have to say. What was your personal reason for purchasing a Taurus striker-fired pistol? I paid $200 for it on consignment and promptly took it out and ran 500 rounds through it with no issues.WVUBeta1904 wrote:I'm curious to hear what VGOF Taurus owners have to say. I bought it at the time as a truck gun, it is the only thing I use it for.

Yup! Scott and I are on the same page. I paid $200 for a PT-111 Mil/Pro, just because it was $200. I don't even carry it, it's just a "trainer" when I have more than one person out. Glock 19, and the Taurus PT111.

I don't own a Taurus, but I've fired a few.
My experience has given me the impression that Taurus makes good inexpensive revolvers, but I wouldn't want to rely on their semi-auto pistols.

Re: Massive Taurus Safety Settlement
Taurus PT111 Gen2's are going for $199 down from $249 @ PSA until tomorrow. These prices are always enticing...too bad there aren't discounts on any pistols I want.

Re: Massive Taurus Safety Settlement
Taurus has had too many quality/reliability problems over the years and it has hit too many models that I regard it as a company wide problem. My life/safety and that of my loved ones is too important to trust to any firearm/maker that has questions of reliability/safety.SHMIV wrote:My experience has given me the impression that Taurus makes good inexpensive revolvers, but I wouldn't want to rely on their semi-auto pistols.
