Conversations with folks who have never been to the South.

Post by Reverenddel »

Interesting conversation on another forum. Someone asked me to define "Southern". I thought, and summed it up like this. "I have more in common with a rural black man in Georgia, than I do with a urban white man in downtown Boston".

Truth.

I see all the crap going down in dc and all points north and wonder WTF? Mostly because I've never been at odds with anyone especially black people here. I swear there's something in the water that makes people hateful up there!

According to this article, there is even evidence to support the idea that Northeast is more racist than the South. Interesting read.

I've never heard anyone talk about that great Northern Cuisine. Never heard anyone talk about retiring & moving up north either.

I personally believe that most of the people running their necks about southern folks, don't live in the south, have never lived in the south, & are envious of our lifestyle/s, etc. They point fingers at incidents that occur yet, ignore or are oblivious to incidents occurring in their own neck of the concrete.

I always laugh when I hear someone from Chicago on tv talking about racism in the south, or gun violence, etc. They totally ignore they are the capital of violence, racism, etc.

My last job (I'm a contractor) was for a black couple. To me they were just an older couple of hard working people. When I was leaving yesterday, I couldn't leave without a firm handshake thank you from him, & a heart felt hug from her. It warmed my heart all day. I too.... have more in common with that couple than any urban white person in New York, Chicago, or Boston.
