US Army plans to cut 40,000 troops over next two years

The U.S. Army is planning to cut more than 40,000 troops over the next two years, a senior U.S. defense official confirmed to Fox News Tuesday.

General Martin Dempsey announced at a Senate Armed Services Committee Hearing Tuesday that dwindling resources was a major factor in the decision to cut the number of active troops from 490,000 to 450,000.

In addition to the troop cuts, 17,000 Army civilian employees will be laid off in a plan that is to be formally announced on Thursday.

The announcement comes just one day after President Obama said there were “no current plans” to send more troops to Iraq to fight Islamic State, although he did not rule out the possibility in the future.

In 2014, former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel first announced a plan to cut the Army to pre-9/11 levels and pre WWII levels in a 2015 budget proposal.

My Thoughts: If the whole reason is to cut manpower over all, then what about this; we’ve spent millions of dollars to train and prepare these Army personnel to be some of the highest capable military force America has seen up to date, so why doesn’t the Army just keep these people who are all trained up and reduce the number of people who enlist in the Army to achieve the reduction numbers that they are being required to accomplish.

My Thoughts: If the whole reason is to cut manpower over all, then what about this; we’ve spent millions of dollars to train and prepare these Army personnel to be some of the highest capable military force America has seen up to date, so why doesn’t the Army just keep these people who are all trained up and reduce the number of people who enlist in the Army to achieve the reduction numbers that they are being required to accomplish.

Not all of the Army is reducing it's force. Special Operations is growing not shrinking. Rangers, Special Forces, Delta, etc.... is expanding, & has for years. The size of these forces has more than doubled in the last 10yrs, & still growing. They are being used, to. The difference is, we're not sending in standing armies as much. However, special operators are deployed, & conducting missions as I type all over the world, in countless countries.

Politically speaking, it's much easier to claim plausible deniability with special operations. The outward appearance may be a reduction in force, while the real motive is a switch to a more modern force that is used frequently. My opinion is, the Army is streamlining, & improving their fighting capabilities by "cutting the fat" so to speak, & putting more resources into their modern covert fighting forces. There's many jobs in the Army that are somewhat outdated when looking at todays modern unconventional warfare, & or missions. The training, & expense that goes into special operators is insane in time & money. Don't bet on the Army throwing it away. Im willing to bet those reductions are in MOS's that aren't as utilized as they once were, or are outdated for todays mission.
