I got my 10 yr old son a blank firing Colt 1911 replica that shoots 8mm blanks. Since I live in a neighborhood that backs up to a US Rt (Rt5) I called the James City Police and asked them if it was ok to shoot it on my property.
The officer asked if it was a handgun, if it could fire live rounds, to which I said "No" He then said that it was ok and that in 20 years he had never heard of someone asking if they could shoot a "blank firing pistol" on their property.

Sooooo....I let my son shoot it. Damn! It was LOUD. I soon had an officer at my door telling me that someone across RT5 SWORE that my son was shooting off a 1911 from my back portch. LOL

The officer asked to see the pistol, which my son proceeded to get from our safe. I was so proud of him when he hit the slide button, extracted the clip, pulled back the chamber and examined it, then put it on "safety", then turned the pistol around and handed it grip first to the officer!

The officer laughed, looked at my son and said " I wish there were many more like you out there so I wouln't have to be so cautious". He commended my son on his safety, and turned to me and said "Way to go!"

But no, I have to go to Charles City if I want to pull out the "Heavy Artillery".

The only thing I can shoot in my back yard (other than the bull) is a rubber band gun. I have consider setting up a squirrel launcher though...

I hardly ever do any shooting in my backyard unless a crow or groundhog is in the garden. Most all of my shooting is done from the front porch or side yard. I need to extend my range a little, I only have 75 yards from my porch railing to the target backstop.

Be particular, and be vigilant, as the enemy will only attack on two occasions:
When you're ready or when you're not ready.

Also never forget, that everyone who shows up, is not necessarily there to help.

VAhunter, By backyard, I meant at the house - no not AT the house! - on the property. I can shoot 360 degrees from the house (when the missus isn't home) with safe backstops. Very few varmints around here...

Until reading behind you guys, I didn't realize what I take for granted is a real luxury, something NOVA doesn't afford.

DK, do you have blueprints for this squirrel launcher? Or maybe video of one in action?

Kudoes to you for starting your son early! I'd always figured I'd teach my oldest son to shoot pistol, but I didn't own any, I've always been a rifleman. Well, life comes at you fast, they say, and one thing led to another and yikes! he's almost out the door. So that's when I got the XD, then the bottom fell out of the ammo can... and the primer box...
So it's been kind of sketchy getting enough rds to educate two noobs what a handfull the .45ACP is.
We've still had some good times though, just no rapid fire.

I see somebody got it up already. Its quite simple and clever. Put a bowl on rubber bands. Fill it with peanuts, stretch it back and when the tree rat crawls in let em fly. :hysterical:

Well, I did some backyard shooting today, at both houses, and I made a neighbor VERY VERY VERY mad.

Well, Terry (tbull537, Sergeant, North Carolina Highway Patrol, and mother's boyfriend), cooked chicken for us today. Chicken was amazing, well, I had loaded up the 270, the Nagant, and the Mach II with me before I left over there. After dinner/supper I decided to squeeze off a few 270 rounds and see if those darned Federal rounds shot any better AFTER I had my surgery. Well, to my amazement, they didn't. The rounds shot HORRIBLE, I mean PIECES OF JUNK. Darn things didn't go anywhere I wanted. I could hit a 16oz bottle at 150 yards with my Remington 130 Grainers, but couldn't hit the same bottle at 20 yards with the stinking Federal's. I will be using them for cases ONLY from now on.

Well, what are some of the MAIN things that you do when shooting? Ear and eye protection, right? Well, I had my ear and eye protection on, and do you guys know the point of ear and eye protection? To protect your ears and eyes. So, here I am, loading up the 270, 4 rounds of the Federal, lying down on the deck, barrel through the banisters, taking aim at my targets down range. I shoot once, twice, three times, and about the fourth time, the neighbor decides to take his place in his tree stand about 300 yards to the left of where I am shooting looking into this big open field. Well, the big open field he is "hunting" in is behind the big expanse of trees that I am shooting into. The trees are about 100 yards thick and there is NO way these 270 bullets can go through it. However, the noise can and did scare off the deer that he was so patiently waiting for.

I had no idea this goober (I despise this man with a passion) had gone into his little booth, which is on Terry's land by the way. Therefore, I just kept a shooting, and scaring off his deer. He had a deer in the field, and about the time he was getting his bow up, I shot and scared that sucker off. I personally thought it was funny, he did NOT think that it was funny when he came and talked (more like yelled) at me for shooting my 270 there.

I told him to announce himself next time he was going shooting so I would get a larger caliber to shoot.

I do, but only with my Hammerli RWS 850 .22 caliber air rifle that has a taped-up Umarex compensator. It's quiet as can be, and the neighbors would never know I was shooting it if I didn't tell them.
