The shoot is open to all RRRC members, VCDL members and any guests who wish to attend.

ISIS IN AMERICA? Online Warning Says 'Trained Soldiers' in 15 States

A grim online warning from a self-described American jihadist said Sunday's terror attack in Texas was the work of ISIS and that the terrorist group has scores of "trained soldiers" positioned in 15 states, awaiting orders to carry out more operations.

The warning, which was posted on a file-sharing site, could not be verified, but was signed by Abu Ibrahim Al Ameriki. That name matches the moniker of a shadowy American known to have joined a terrorist group in Pakistan several years ago and who has appeared in propaganda videos before. The chilling threat named five of the states where it is claimed that ISIS has terror cells in place.

“Out of the 71 trained soldiers 23 have signed up for missions like Sunday, we are increasing in number," read the warning. "Of the 15 states, 5 we will name… Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, California, and Michigan.”

Although Sunday's attack at a "Draw the Prophet" Muhammad contest in Garland was thwarted when a traffic cop helping to provide security at the event shot both attackers dead, the posting seemed to claim the operation was successful.

Add Garland Attackers To List Of Names That Prove Background Checks Don’t Work

On May 5 CNN reported that the two gunmen who attacked Garland’s Curtis Culwell Center acquired their guns “legally.”

The use of the word “legally” implies that the two alleged gunmen–Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi–went through background checks to acquire their weapons. This makes them only the latest in a long list of high profile examples which prove that background checks are an ineffective way to fight crime.

Here is an updated list of high profile attackers who passed background checks for their guns:

Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi (Garland), Jared and Amanda Miller (Las Vegas), Aaron Ybarra (Seattle Pacific University), Elliot Rodger (Santa Barabara), Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood 2014), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Paul Ciancia (LAX), and Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard), James Holmes (Aurora theater), Jared Loughner (Tucson), Nidal Hasan (Fort Hood 2009), Jiverly Wong (Binghamton), Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech), and Naveed Haq (Seattle).

Ironically, since 1791 Americans have purchased their guns privately from co-workers, friends, family, neighbors, and other decent people who might be selling a gun to get the four or five hundred dollars they need to make ends meet on a given month. But the left stepped in during the Clinton presidency and told us we were not safe without background checks. Thus background checks for all retail gun purchases were implemented.

And now, Gabby Giffords, her husband Mark Kelly, and outspoken gun control advocate Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) tell us that an expansion of background checks–so as to include private sales as well–is the “responsible” thing to do.

Yet the Garland attackers stand in stark contrast to these claims and expose the fact that Americans are trading freedom for constraint via background checks, and getting nothing but attacked in return.

10. Universal background checks - Oregon gun owners lose the fight

First Washington, and now Oregon, both have Universal Background Check (UBC) laws. It will not end there, of course. Those states are headed toward Universal Gun Registration so that the Universal Background Checks can be enforced. Confiscation then becomes practical at some point in the future.

Lies, distortions, and lots of money got the job done. Will it lower crime? Nope. But that’s not why the antis want UBCs.

That is sad to see, but our focus is making sure such a travesty never happens in Virginia.

When Accomac County, Virginia Circuit Court Clerk Samuel H. Cooper Jr., an elected official, began offering gun owners in his county the option under recent but obscure legislation to apply for a Virginia concealed handgun permit (CHP) that included a photo, he did not think the move would be controversial. But when it comes to gun regulations, things can get complicated pretty quickly.

A number of gun owners applied for these photo-CHPs, but some of them and their associates in the gun rights blogosphere took a “deep dive” look at this new permit and didn't like some of the things they found. One criticism of Clerk Cooper was that his office’s photo-CHP contained a statement to the effect that CHP holders must immediately notify police officers if they are carrying a concealed handgun.

Unlike a few states, Virginia is in the majority of states that do not require gun carriers to notify police officers that they are carrying concealed handguns. Moreover, in Virginia, persons 18 years of age or older do not need a permit to carry a concealed handgun in a vehicle or boat provided that the gun is secured i a container such as an unlocked but closed glove box or console.

Another objection gun owners made on gun blog and email discussion lists is that Cooper's new photo-permit displayed the driver’s license number of the permit holder. The normally issued non-photo CHPs do not contain a driver’s license number.

OpenCarry.org co-founder John Pierce, a Virginia attorney specializing in “gun trusts” and restoration of civil and firearms rights, said that neither Virginia statutes nor the official state-wide uniform Virginia State Police CHP application require disclosure of a driver’s license number to apply for a CHP.

Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) President Philip Van Cleave has no objections to Clerks of Court offering photo-CHPs, but added that “obviously Clerk Cooper should comply with Virginia law as to the format of the permit.” Clerk Cooper told the examiner.com by email that that he never had [a] request to omit publication of the driver’s license number on the non-photo CHP, but if he did, “I suppose we would not use it.”

But a curious issue lingers – does Clerk Cooper’s photo-CHP actually exempt the permit holder from carrying the statutorily required commonwealth photo-ID, US passport, or military ID when carrying concealed handguns pursuant to a permit issued in Virginia?

During an event in South Carolina, President Obama told students that he was disappointed that Congress refused to pass gun restrictions after the Sandy Hook elementary massacre.

“I’ll be honest with you, I thought that after what happened at Sandy Hook, that that would make us think about [it],” he said during a town hall event at Benedict College.

Obama said that one of the hardest days of his presidency was talking to the parents of children who were “gunned down in their own classroom.”

“You would have thought at that point, that’s gotta be enough of a motivator for us to want to do something about this,” he said with disbelief. “And we couldn’t get it done.”

He explained that he was still trying to do what he could to “crack down” on the availability of guns, but that it was difficult.

In some neighborhoods, he said, it was “easier for you to buy a firearm than it is to buy a book.”

“There are neighborhoods that it’s easier for you to buy a handgun and clips than it is to for you to buy a fresh vegetable,” he said. “As long as that’s the case than we’re going to continue to see unnecessary violence.”

Obama complained that in some places, political figures were trying to loosen gun restrictions.

“In fact, in some places it goes the opposite direction,” he said. “People just say well we should have firearms in Kindergarten and we should have machine guns in bars, and you think I’m exaggerating – I mean you look at some of these laws that come up.”

Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was grievously wounded by a gunman in a 2011 attack, returned to Capitol Hill Wednesday to help relaunch legislation aimed at closing loopholes in background checks for gun buyers.

The bill would expand the current federal law mandating background checks to include weapons sold at gun shows and sold over the Internet, leaving exceptions for transfers between family members. The language in the new bill is similar to language that failed in an April 2013 Senate vote, effectively killing the proposal for the 113th Congress.

Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, joined her husband, Mark Kelly, and several members of Congress to mark the introduction of a House bill for the 114th Congress.

"Stopping violence takes courage," she told a packed room. "The courage to do what's right, the courage of new ideas. ... Now is the time to come together and be responsible. Democrats, Republicans, everyone. We must never stop fighting. Fight, fight, fight. Be bold, be courageous, the nation's counting on you."

It may take a whole lot more than courage to get even this relatively modest proposal through the Congress in the next 22 months. In the current political landscape, it's tough to see a path for the measure to proceed through either chamber.

The new House bill, the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act of 2015, has bipartisan support. Rep. Bob Dold (R-Ill.) appeared Wednesday with the Democratic authors of the bill, and three other Republicans -- Mike Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Peter T. King (N.Y.) and Pat Meehan (Pa.) -- are also authors.

But Dold and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), the bill's lead author and chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, offered little besides blind hope that the bill would make it through committee and through House leadership to the floor.

The National Rifle Association, whose influence on lawmakers can hardly be overstated, opposes the expansion of background checks, saying in a 2013 statement that they "will not prevent the next shooting, will not solve violent crime and will not keep our kids safe in schools."

Neither Thompson nor Dold could offer any concrete reason to think that House Speaker John A. Boehner would let the bill onto the House floor if somehow it did emerge from the House Judiciary Committee.

Meanwhile, the outlook in the Senate appears grave.

With 60 votes necessary for passage, only 54 members supported the measure in April 2013 -- four months after the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy put gun control back on the national agenda. Of those 54 votes, several of the Democrats voting in favor have since been replaced by NRA-endorsed Republicans.

Gone is Kay Hagan (N.C.); in is Thom Tillis. Gone is Tom Harkin (Iowa); in is Joni Ernst. Out is Tim Johnson (S.D.); in is Mike Rounds. Out is Jay Rockefeller; in in Shelly Moore Capito (W.V.). Gone is Mark Udall (Colo.); in is Cory Gardner.

Asked about the political realities, Thompson made an observation, that while undoubtedly correct, only highlighted the long odds any gun control measure faces the House: "If this thing passes out of the House, it will fly out of the Senate."

Dold, a moderate Republican who represents a swing district in the north suburbs of Chicago, acknowledged the cynicism that might greet the bill's introduction but said "we have to continually push; we have to continually try."

"I'm not saying I'm going to the speaker, and it's going to be on the floor next week -- it's not," Dold said. "But my hope is this continues to build momentum and ultimately will be passed. ... It is something that the American public wants us to do.”

WAPO TRIES TO STIR UP PANIC TO REVERSE CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY MOMENTUM

With support for Constitutional Carry gaining momentum in a manner reminiscent of the way concealed carry gained momentum before sweeping the country in the 1990s, The Washington Post (WaPo) has resorted to trying to stir up enough panic to get numerous state legislatures to abandon the idea.

Constitutional Carry is open carry and concealed carry without a permit. It exists in Alaska, Arizona, Montana, Vermont, and Wyoming.

It is currently working its way through state legislatures in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, New Hampshire, and West Virginia. Open carry without a permit is legal in these states, and legislators in each argue that allowing open carry with no permit yet requiring a permit for concealed carry is really a way of punishing—or criminalizing—citizens who carry concealed.

Some of the legislators have been even more pointed in their arguments for Constitutional Carry, making it clear that the 2nd Amendment itself is all the justification a citizen should need for carrying a gun openly or concealed.

Breitbart News previously reported that West Virginia Senator Robert Kames (R-Upshur) pointed out that bearing arms “is a United States constitutional right.” He said, “The 2nd Amendment recognizes this inherent right.”

So WaPo is left with no recourse except to warn of the dangers of allowing Americans to exercise this inherent right—the danger of allowing them to bear the arms they keep without infringement. To that end, WaPo warns that Constitutional Carry means Americans will carry guns without checking in with the government first, without going through gun classes, safety courses, or background checks.

In saying these things, WaPo misses the fact that the ultimate purpose of many concealed carry permit classes around the country isn’t to make the citizen a better shot or more adept at drawing and shooting a gun to begin with. Rather, the purpose is to lecture them on state laws regarding lethal use of force, thereby absolving the state of liability in a licensing situation.

But Constitutional Carry is another way to absolve the state of liability—it is perhaps the best way—for it makes responsibility and liability a personal matter once again. At the same time, it gets the government out of the process so residents in Constitutional Carry states can enjoy freedom in all its fullness once more.

Does Carrying a Weapon Concealed Make You a Coward?

Carrying a weapon secreted upon your person was at one time considered sneaky, dishonest and downright cowardly. At that time there was a very good reason for this. That reason no longer exists but the attitude against concealed weapons still prevails and is reflected in many state and local laws.

In the early years of the American Republic gentlemen often settled matters of honor by dueling, sometimes with fists, knives or swords but usually with single shot pistols. In fact several early presidents fought duels along with scores of state and local legislators. This practice was especially prevalent here in the South where settling matters of honor had strong roots in our Scotts-Irish ancestry with the long-held tradition of trial by combat.

A fairly elaborate code of etiquette evolved around the practice and every effort was made to ensure that both contenders had an equal and fair chance and that neither party had an advantage in weapons. If you have ever had the chance to examine a brace of antique dueling pistols you no doubt noticed that they are exact copies of each other so that no man had a better pistol. Traditionally the challenger would allow his opponent to choose which of the pistols he wanted to use. Duels were often fought at high noon, again so that neither man would be disadvantaged by having the sun in his eyes. Every effort was made to keep the fight fair and square so as the “best man” would win.

This notion of might-makes-right was also employed to settle disputes in the backwoods and on the frontier where a court system was non-existent. It was not uncommon to “step outside and settle things like gentlemen”. To attempt to enter into one of these contests with a concealed weapon could be enough to get you killed by your opponents second. This is why men were expected to wear their side arms openly so any potential challenger would know what he was up against.

Even though dueling has been obsolete for well over a century the attitude that carrying concealed weapons is somehow dishonest still prevails and is reflected in state laws that severely restrict or forbid them. A perfect example of this attitude emerged after the court case where George Zimmerman was tried and acquitted for shooting Treyvon Martin, an unarmed teenager. Many saw the “not guilty” verdict as a great injustice not only because of the racial component, but because George Zimmerman “cheated” by sneaking a deadly weapon into a fist fight therefore taking unfair advantage of a teenager. This is, in the minds of many no different from the stereotypical “bad guy” wrestler who pulls a foreign object out of his tights and clocks the baby face when the referee is not looking. Oh, the injustice of it all!

Actually, a ghost of dueling still exists in the sport of boxing. The Marquis De Queensbury rules closely follow dueling etiquette as both require a neutral referee, a physician must be present, each fighter has a second to assist him (corner man) and both contenders are brought together where the rules are explained and both participants shake hands (BTW, the custom of shaking hands is thought to have originated as a method to make sure your opponent did not have a dagger hidden up his sleeve. A vigorous shaking would cause it to fall out.) Both fighters agree to abide by the rules and conduct themselves as gentlemen at all times and obey the referee’s instructions.

The salient point that many people fail to grasp is that dueling, just like boxing was totally VOLUNTARY. As rough and bloody as it was, these men AGREED to meet somewhere and fight. To use a modern expression, dueling was a “voluntary act between consenting adults”. Therefore they were honor bound to obey the previously agreed upon rules and give their opponent a fair and equal chance.

Now that dueling is a thing of the past, and the only legal fights happen in tightly controlled sporting events, this begs the question:

Is it still shiftless and underhanded to carry a concealed weapon?

Of course not as long as you carry weapon only as a means of self-defense. A criminal assault is not a duel! If you did not agree to fight you are under no moral or ethical obligation to conduct yourself as a gentleman and give your assailant a fair fight or sporting chance. If some young thug decides to use you for a punching bag you have no guarantee that he will quit when he thinks you have had enough. You can’t bet your life on your attacker knowing when to show mercy.

But what about the law? The only law only applies until the police get there is the law of the jungle, and you MUST survive. If you are unable to match athleticism with the attacker, especially after you have been addled by a sucker punch, you better have the right tool for the job and be able to get to it quickly. This means a concealed weapon. After all, there is no referee at a criminal beat down and you don’t always have the luxury of a second to step in and save you. There are no rules! You are on your own. Prepare accordingly.

EVERYTOWN: FIGHT CAMPUS SEXUAL ASSAULT WITH BACKPACKS, NOT GUNS

Michael Bloomberg-funded gun control groups Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America are currently running a television ad against Campus Carry which says, “Backpacks and bullets don’t mix.”

The ad is part of their larger push to derail GOP efforts to pass Campus Carry so college women can be armed to fight off sexual assault on campuses in Florida.

According to the Bradenton Herald, Everytown and Moms Demand Action are adamantly opposed to HB 4005/SB 176, which is sponsored by representative Greg Steube (R-Sarasota). The legislation would allow women with concealed carry permits to be armed for self-defense on campus.

The measure has already made it through one senate panel and is moving on down the legislative pike.

Steube is also sponsoring legislation that will allow Florida teachers “and other school employees to carry concealed weapons on public school campuses.” The goal is to prevent a Sandy Hook-like attack from being successfully carried out in the state of Florida.

Everytown and Moms Demand Action also oppose the push to arm public school teachers against a Sandy Hook-like attack.

Moms Demand Action’s Chryl Anderson explained: “Our teachers entered the esteemed profession of education to teach, not to become sharpshooters.”

Bloomberg’s Amazingly Inaccurate Ad to Keep Areas Gun-Free Zones

Bloomberg’s argument here is that the bill to allow concealed handgun permit holders to carry on school property is really an attempt to let criminals carry guns around schools. The fact that people will need a permit that requires a criminal background check is never mentioned.

So what is the rate that permit holders cause problems? It is very, very rare. Permit holders not only commit very few crimes, but they are very law-abiding even compared to police who are already extremely law-abiding.

It might be possible that Bloomberg’s people will argue that background checks aren’t perfect, but the very few errors that they point to are usually not errors (gun control activists still want to claim that people with expunged records should not have guns).

Perhaps the craziest thing about this ad is that Bloomberg apparently believes that criminals only carry guns in places where they are legally allowed to carry them.

GERALDO RIVERA: GUNS FOR ME, BUT NOT FOR THEE

On Friday, Breitbart News reported that Fox News Channel’s Geraldo Rivera said “far too many” Americans own guns legally. Months early, on August 28, he said the 2nd Amendment was “blind and stupid.”

However, if we back up just a bit further — to December 31, 2001 — we find the following AP headline: “Geraldo Packs Gun and a TV Camera.”

The AP story is about “Rivera’s decision to bring a gun into a war zone.” Something they say Rivera did while reporting near Tora Bora, Afghanistan, and something which made other journalists wary of being near Rivera.

For example, the AP quotes correspondent Peter Arnett as saying: “If the word gets out that a journalist is carrying a gun, it makes it more difficult for everyone.” He suggested that carrying a gun changes the landscape for wartime journalists by giving enemy soldiers cause to “look at reporters, particularly American reporters, as some kind of opponent.”

Knowledge of Rivera’s wartime gun-totting came via his own admission a week before the AP story ran. It happened on Fox News, where Rivera said, “If they’re going to get us, it’s going to be in a gun fight.” An anchor followed up on the question by asking Rivera if he was carrying a gun and he responded by “nodding yes.”

It appears that a gun is a good thing to have when Rivera’s life is on the line but when the lives of average Americans are on the line — as they are everyday in the cities and towns of America — a gun is just another reminder of the “blind and stupid” 2nd Amendment.
