My Ruger SP101

I love most semi's, but I have always been a revolver guy at heart. I bought this SP101 about 4 years ago for personal protection on my job as a Field Service technician for a local real estate company. It has accompanied me on thousands of inspections in vacant dwellings throughout the Hampton Roads area. It saved me from harm twice. It is the heaviest small frame revolver that I have experience with. It handles .38 rounds like shooting BB's. The .357 rounds are another story. Will be adding a new piece soon, as the wife wants a PF9.

I've always been right partial to revolvers, myself. I've also discovered that I really like Ruger. And, I've loved. 357mag since the first round I ever fired.

The last time I was around a Ruger Security 6, or a Service 6, was back in the mid 80's A Gunners Mate friend off the ship owned them. His Security 6 was a .38 with 4" barrel. He owned about a 1/2 dozen Ruger and S&W revolvers. We did a bit of shooting behind his house when ever we had time.

I loved his Security 6, and preferred shooting with it over his other revolvers. It is hard for me to compare the Security 6..... to the SP101. It's been so long since I have fired it. The SP101 is definitely more compact, but it is pretty hefty for being a small frame gun.

I fell in love with the SP101 immediately. Even though I have fairly large hands, it just felt right when I picked it up. The gun shop recommended a over sized grip for me, but I liked the feel of it just the way it was. The grip didn't pose any problems on the range either. I have since bought a Hogue grip, but ended up giving it away. Some people don't like the channeled rear sight on the SP101..... saying that it is too hard to aim against a dark back ground. I tend to agree with them on that issue. I may try some day glow paint some day. About the only real comparison I can make with the two models is that they are both extremely rugged revolvers. The SP101 spits out .38 rounds all day long and remains comfortable to use. The .357 rounds......not so much.

I am not a gun "guru" who has fired hundreds of different semi's/rifles/revolvers,...... so take anything I say with a grain of salt. What I can tell you........ is that it is the most fun revolver that I have personally fired.

The SP101 is a revolver that comes up time and time again, whenever somebody is looking for a first/new pistol, even amoung the popular semi-automatic talk. It's a tested and trusted firearm, from a company that is known for revolvers. Another plus - it's a pistol that requires little effort to maintain properly.

Defintely one of the best wheelguns you can own; some would even go as far as to say it's the best (always a matter of opinion and preference, though )

My wife bought one several years ago for her EDC . I picked up a slightly used one at an Estate Sale last year for $240.00 with nice holster and 450 rds. of ammo. We shot both today ! Everybody I know that has one loves it.

I have a sister-in-law who decided that the SP-101 was "her" gun.... My brother has wisely decided not to contest that decision....

Ha. W2B has a tendency to claim guns as her own. I'm starting to think I'll never own another gun, as long as I live. She, however, will have an arsenal.
