As I read it, he was not playing with his firearm. He was playing with someone else's...that was stolen.

Lol, yes, you assume correctly. I'd probably go on and frame the gun, too. It would be a great conversation piece.

The rightful owner of the stolen firearm should be able to have the "IDIOT" mounted and displayed over the mantle like other "Trophies".
