Self Defense - Get out there and move your body

Post by TacticalMom »

I have been super busy what with home schooling, work, Church has required a lot more of my presence, and training.

What have I been doing. I have been doing cardio, kick boxing, and MMA (mixed martial arts). I really liked this article. If I am disarmed be it via government or just out without a nerf projectile can I defend me and my own? I can better now.

I know this article is aimed at woman, but I think it is good for both men and woman.

"Stop Being Too Nice

This being “too nice” aspect has other ramifications for self-defense. Too often women are taught to be nice, to not offend, to not potentially hurt others feelings. This can cause issues that can actually put you in danger. In a parking lot, or when someone comes to your door, you might ignore intuition or let someone get closer than you should, because you are being too nice. It is hard work to undo this lifetime of training. I have finally learned I don’t have to open the door just because someone knocks on it.
"

I was always taught to be so nice, and open and caring, and while those are great values, I also listen to my instincts and if I feel uncomfortable, I try to remove myself from a situation.

Funny that "Roadhouse" came up. I just found that on the movie rack at the truck stop. I wanted to get it, but GF wouldn't let me. She thinks that it's a movie about a whore house, and I can't convince her otherwise.

I have read the 'Gift of Fear' that was mentioned in the article and would definitely recommend reading a few select chapters if not the whole thing.

I know a lot of folks are not to fond of James Yeager... but I was watching a video of his not too long ago where he was talking about self defense by means other that with a firearm. Something he said that really resonated was that (really loose paraphrasing) "there is a lot that can happen between nothing and killing a guy. You need to know how to defend yourself by other means"

Truth is, if you get attacked and someone is right on top of you... your firearm wont do any good if you are in a choke hold or someone is throwing punches. At a minimum, you need to be able to fight someone off of you.

I don't look like much now, but when I was younger was a First Degree Black Belt in Karate. I largely trained with Jim Graden, World Kickboxing Champion, and his brothers Mark and John. John is ranked 7th best instructor in the world. I also had the great pleasure of getting some face time and training tips from Joe Lewis, world renowned martial artist and actor. There is an incredible amount of self confidence that comes with knowing that you can fight off multiple attackers... because you have done it already.

Even with all the formal training... street fighting is a different world. Make sure whoever you train with is going to give you real world defense skills. There's no points earn on the streets.

When people ask me what I think they should do, I tell everyone, learn and practice Karate (or Tae Kwon Do), Judo and Brazilian Jujutsu. Take the best pieces of all 3 forms so you can be a fluid fighter standing, getting someone to the ground and fighting/grappling on the ground.

I also recommend learning how to knife fight. There are very few reputable people around here, but if you can find a retired military person who teaches Israeli style, you will be way ahead of the game. The two best thing about learning to knife fight is, size/sex doesn't matter and you don't necessarily need a knife to perform many of the defensive and offensive maneuvers. You can use things like pens, pencils, forks, car keys, etc. Remember, whoever bleeds the least in a knife fight, wins.

The biggest draw back for any of this training is going to be making the time.

Thanks Marcspaz that is great advice.

I just wanna be able to defend me and my own if I can. I am not going for world champion in MMA or anything like that. I doubt I can get there at this point, but it is great exercise, and I am getting a bit more confidence even if it is me being able to twist and wiggle out of a hold. All told so far, in the last 7 months I have lost 65 lbs and am healthier and far quicker. =)

I think that training across the board both armed and unarmed is a good thing to do.

Be prepared no matter what right?

I just did a 60 minute training today of MMA, Karate, TKD, Muay Thai, and Boxing. The thing that I am having a little trouble with is the ascending elbow in Muay Thai. Its not something I am used to. Putting the power into the muscles to put the power behind the elbow is foreign to me. However, I am trying. Yay!

I will keep trying and keep bettering myself. That is my goal.

The one thing I've learned over the years, whatever you learn, make sure it works no matter your health, weight, or condition.

Because if you're rocking a sprained ankle, 30lb's over weight with a cold?

THAT is when some punkazz is gonna come at you.

They don't attack strong, healthy, aware people. Like predators they are... they chose the WEAK of the pack!

Yep I totally agree with you Rev. I am glad I am learning unarmed strikes using, feet (balls of feet, and heals), knees, elbows, back hands, and of course my fists.

Here is hoping that if I have a sprained ankle and am over weight I will be able to knee a person, and then stun then or knock them out with a right and left hook at the jaw and temple.

Also why I went with MMA so it is not just TKD with mostly kicking, or Karate, with mostly punches/chops. Maybe if I can keep them guessing they won't know what is coming next? At least that is what I hope.

The two fastest ways to end a physical fight are to take away someone's ability to breathe and their ability to stand/walk. On the street there is no such thing as a fair fight.

Punch someone in the throat with a jab and they will start choking. If you do it hard enough with a reverse punch, it collapses the wind pipe and they will choke to death. 11 lbs of force is all it takes.

If you don't want them to die, after they pass out, squeeze the wind pipe from the sides to pop it back open again. You may have to push your fingers pretty deep into the neck so you can get both fingers about 12-18 degrees behind the center line... you will be squeezing side to side and pulling forward slightly.

If you hit them with about 33 lbs of force, you break the trachea and they die anyway... well, unless you do an emergency tracheostomy.

If the jab to the throat doesn't land, you have distracted them, even if they block it, it doesn't matter. While they are distracted, use your back leg to front kick their knee in the wrong direction... breaking their leg. As they are crying in pain, there is no way they can hop after you faster than you can run away... even if you have a sprained ankle and are 30 lbs over weight. (you're killin' em' Rev!)
