Leather belt buckle mod

Post by wittmeba »

I have a decent leather belt that does not accommodate interchangeable buckles but with a couple snaps and some work it can be modified.

I bought a kit of 7 sets of snaps from ACMoore but the length of the pin on the snaps are too short. I looked at Michael's Arts and Crafts and same problem.

Anyone know of a common merchant that might have snap set kits with a longer barrel on the snap head itself?

I think I have found several online that should work and cost is not an issue but freight for some is more than the material cost.

Suggestions for Roanoke/Salem area?

Also, I need to fold the end to provide for the new buckle. Just wondering from any leather experts if submersing in hot water for a bit to soften the area is acceptable. Then fold where necessary and apply some weight until it cools/dries a bit.

Yes I did find some Tandy links after posting and their freight was quite cheap...like $3.00 or so. They offer bags of 10 sets of snaps in various finishes. That's probably what I will order. Thanks.

This is about what I was looking for. I'm not big on ordering from Ebay from a couple bad experiences but not a big loss if it is incorrect.

With a track record like that, you should be good with them.

I'll throw your new category question into the mod bin to make Jay and Rick check it out. We'll see if he gives it the thumbs up...

I've been needing snaps for my leather jacket, and I ran into the same problem as OP.

Wittmeba, I have a few leather belts that use a strip of thinner leather to attach the buckle. Basically, they run the thin strip (which is the same width as the belt) through the buckle, and fold it in half, sort of sandwiching the buckle end of the belt between the halves of the leather strip. The strip attaches to the belt with 2 screw/bolt thingys. I was considering switching from the screw/bolt thingys to snaps, so I didn't have to dig out a screwdriver every time I wanted to switch buckles.

T-bolts? Screw with a threaded post-insert?

What I am trying to accomplish is convert an existing leather strap belt with a stitched buckle. I need to cut the threads, install a couple snaps so I can use interchangeable buckles. Not a big deal just have a decent belt strap I can use. And it gives me something to tinker with :)

Screw with threaded post insert. Like I said, I want to dispense with those, and replace them with snaps, anyway. It was the use of the thinner leather strip that was my main point.

I reckon that there are multiple ways to do what you wanted to do; I just figured I'd toss an extra option at ya.

Even if I had these I could mod the belt strap I have (just an old one I want to modify) but could be mod to accommodate other buckles. But as you, I would prefer snaps. I have the punch and base piece for installation...just need some snaps with approx 3/16" - 5/16" deep post.
